Have a look at Park Plaza, (the one on Sukhumvit http://www.parkplaza.com/bangkok-hotel-th-10110/thabgksv?s_cid=bmm_thabgksv_AP-PP-Bangkok-thabgksv-br_Soft.Brand_Park.Plaza.Sukhumvit_Broad )

It's right near the Terminal 21 shopping complex and minutes walk from a MRT...perfect location and a lovely hotel. Rooftop pool, delicious buffet breakfast and super comfy beds.

    Definitely a nice treat. (It's about £35 a night)

I'm putting that on my possible list for my July trip, looks nice! Unfortunately, I can't afford the Hansar on this trip as I'm on my own (unless nice hubby wants to treat me :D)

As I'm sure you've noticed there are loads of hotels to choose from but if you go for somewhere in the £30-40 price band near Asoke or Nana Skytrain stations (though maybe not too close to Nana Plaza complex) then you really cannot go wrong.

I've found lots of possibles! I need to be near to the sky train and shops. I'd also like a nice infinity pool if possible. Its like having a full time job doing research on a 4 week trip!

I stopped in the Navalai last September. It was during the floods so you couldn't use the outside restaurant area it under about a foot of water. It's a good choice if you want to be near the backpacking heaven of Khao San but want to stop somewhere a little more upmarket. Maybe not such a good choice if you want to be near the shopping malls and in times of flood...

Unlucky with the floods. The Navalai being where it is, right on the river is a great option. Khao San is a vibrant area, and a lot cheaper than Sukhumvit.

We stayed in Sukhumvit, on our last SE Asia trip...

...very nice hotel on Soi 4, but like a lot of hotels in Sukhumvit, you could book rooms by the hour!

Imo, Sukmumvit is a place to be avoided, patronised by fat bellied, drunken European men after you know what, and serviced by a lot of young and sad Thai females, there to provide for their every need! Not the right sort of introduction to a wonderful country.

Sukmumvit is a huge area and it's only really the areas immediately around Nana Plaza and Soi Cowboy which have the "you know what" problem and it's easy to avoid (if you want to...)

The OP wants to be near the shopping malls and Sky Train. Whilst Khao San is a fantastic area to spend a day and night bar hopping and meeting people, I'd still say Sukmumvit is better for being right in the middle of things.

So you really need to be careful where you choose your accommodation, ie close to the Sky Train, and preferably on one of the main Soi's, not down some dodgy back-alley.

Have a look at the Pullman King Power hotel. It is away from the Sukhumvit area (thankfully) but only a very short walk or free tuk tuk to Victory Monument and Phaya Thai sky train stations - the latter services the airport link.

It has an association with King Power duty free and the massive duty free outlet is on the same site.

It gets great reviews on Tripadvisor and having stayed every year since it was opened - for value is a good choice.

I stay on the exec floor with lounge access and get a complimentary upgrade to a suite by virtue of my status with accor - and the benefits are fantastic, however, other rooms are very affordable and are also good value.

It is only a short sky train trip to Sukhumvit and Siam (shopping/bars/MBK ETC.) so don't be put off by the location - in fact Rangnam Road (where the hotel is located) has many small bars and restaurants that are much cheaper than the touristy spots - and the fat European sex pests are not as evident! Mrs DD always uses a massage parlour that the locals frequent - and again, much cheaper than those located in tourist areas.

You certainly will be spoilt for choice - but after staying at many hotels in BKK - the Pullman is now always my first choice.

I think I have mentioned this before - but Mrs DD could not get over the fact that I was 'approached' on Sukhumvit when we were briefly separated and was offered a 'Happy Hour' deal with (I assume:eek:) a 'working girl'.

She suggested that as I would only 'utilise' a few minutes, she wondered if I would get a rebate for 'unused time'.

    I have feelings you know!:(

Sukhumvit road has changed a lot in the last few years and is not as colourful as it was 15 years ago, my family and I stay there on every visit.

I am not fat, dont drink and most of the girls are not as young as you would suggest they are also not all sad either, at least no more than I am in my line of work.

Yes it is a wonderful country from your typical tourist point of view as you relax in your inexpensive (now why are they so reasonably priced?) hotel being waited on by (young looking) Thai female hotel staff catering and cleaning to your every need no doubt.
