                    Hi All,
I've finally booked my Thailand flights (for late Aug - woo hoo can't wait).
I went last year, but my stay in Bangkok was too short. We stayed at the Hilton and loved it, but wanted something more central this time.
I wondered if anyone can recommend a hotel or at very least an area we should focus on.
We don't want anything as nice as the Hilton this time - or rather don't want to pay for it!!
We want something that is really central, but being so big not sure really where our focus should be!
Any help much appreciated.

I stayed at the Hansar and it was very nice, I had a suite with an indoor garden and it was one of the nicest hotels I've stayed in. It's next to the sky train station so getting around was easy.

I agree that the Hilton is fantastic, but it's a little away from the action - and on the "wrong side" of the river. If you want to be be in a more central location then you really have to be looking along the long strip from Sukhumvit Road to Ploenchit Rd - it's close to the shopping malls and lots of nightlife (of whatever sort floats your boat) and is serviced by the Sky Train. There are dozens of good hotels to choose from to suit all budgets so it would be hard to recommend one - though I would stay away from the international chains as the independent ones tend to be better value and more authentically Thai.
Have look at http://www.bangkok.com/hotels/sukhumvit.htm and http://www.bangkok.com/hotels/chidlom-_-ploenchit.htm
Another option if you want to be closer to the river is the Silom Rd area.0

Thanks Both - the hansar is a little out of my budget really.
Doshwater - that's great - the more I was the looking the more confused I was getting with so many good hotels - but your suggested areas have really helped me tailor the search!0

Yes, Bangkok can be a very confusing place - which, to many, is part of its charm - and keeps us coming back time and time again.
One thing the city is not short of is good hotels. There's no need to spend a lot of money either. £40-50 a night should get you somewhere very good and for £20-25 it will be perfectly adequate.0

 Gosh, I'm more of a skinflint that I thought!0

Navalai River Resort hotel is right on the river by Pier 11. Pier 11 is also the drop off point for Khao San.

Take the cheap public ferry up or down river. Get off at Central and you're straight on the Sky Train. You can also jump off the ferry close to Chinatown.
Very nice place to stay, watching all the traffic on the river from your hotel terrace supping an ice-cold singha, or eating a lovely buffet brerakfast from the riverside restaurant. Grand!0

Sukhumvit Rd is a good area for shopping and there are many hotels. You can pay as little as 1500 baht (£30) but more realistically 2000-2500 baht (£40-50) for a good 3/4 star hotel. Choose one that is close to the Sky train. Do some research on the internet with agents like Agoda or Asia Hotels or Late Stays or hotels.com. The best cheap hotels I have used in that area are Majestic Suites and Sacha's Hotel uno..0

Stopped at the Grand President in the past and had friends stay there last week without complaints. Centrally located just off Sukhumvit road and the BTS Nana Skytrain station is at the end of the street and 5 minutes walk. Hotels.com are currently showing £38 a night for a double including breakfast and free wifi :jplus either reward points worth 10% OR 12% cashback on Quidco

I stopped in the Navalai last September. It was during the floods so you couldn't use the outside restaurant area it under about a foot of water. It's a good choice if you want to be near the backpacking heaven of Khao San but want to stop somewhere a little more upmarket. Maybe not such a good choice if you want to be near the shopping malls and in times of flood...Bob_the_Saver wrote: »Gosh, I'm more of a skinflint that I thought!
Outside of Bangkok, I rarely spend more than £10-15 a night on accommodation but in the city I like to treat myself to somewhere a little better and in a good location, especially on my way in after a long flight.0
