Always loads of Fords around. I'd not go near one which had high mileage simply because you don't need to. Why bother with big scheduled maintenance bills ?

Great, thanks. I would be content with around 45mpg on longer journeys (which is pretty much all I do) so that sounds promising.

If I wanted a top-class interior, I certainly wouldn't buy a Ford! I don't think it looks tacky though, just rather.. 'average'.

Weird that it doesn't have climate though.. would have expected it to have that feature - annoying.

Thanks very much for the info!

I have a 07 Zetec with 2.0 TDCi. Had it over 5 years and now has 50000 on clock. First diesel, but would need some convincing of going back to petrol.

I get 45mpg driving around Nottingham. 50mpg mixed urban and rural. 60+ on long motorway trips at a steady 60 - 70mph.

I am very pleased with the performance. 0-60 is better than the petrol engined 2.0 (my daughter had one for 6 years so have experience of it.

Consider the Volvo V50 if you want a nicer Focus.

They are pretty much identical under the skin but the Volvo has a much nicer interior and far better seats.

I have had a 2.0D for 9 months now, comfy and economical.
Though I find the economy worse than my mk3 Mondeo, mate I sold that to still get over 50mpg, Volvo gets 45mpg.

Mine is an 08/08, had 101k and full Volvo History when I bought it, drives as new and just flew through its second MOT a few weeks ago.

Mine cost just under £5000 at auction including fees, so about £500/800 more than the equivalent Focus.

One thing on the 1.6D, it is considered unreliable in the trade, and referred to as a "plastic engine", my advice would be to steer clear.

202020 Taxis in Brentwood has used Focus diesel estate for four years now, all silver 2.0D. All must have well over 200k by now.

Don't be scared of high mileage eith full main dealer history and just off lease.

There are lots of these coming through the auctions but the low mileage premium that you need to pay to get a lower mileage one is not worth it in my mind.

Cambelt is due at 125k from memory.

And if you check carefully some 2008 Focus and Volvo V50 don't have a DPF, mine for example doesn't and it was registered May2008, but even though it is the bottom of the range (S) it comes with four electric windows, leather steering wheel and gearknob, comfy seats, lots of airbags, electric mirrors and climate control.

No fuel computer though, most Focus's will have this though.

You will save money going to Auction but the age you are looking for there are lots about.

My gearbox is super slick and no issues with the DMF or clutch.

Though there is a recall on the Volvo based on the Focus platform, C30, S40, V50, C70. It is for a replacement clutch master cylinder, I assume the same recall will be done on the Focus as they use the same parts as far as i know.

My favourite place for fleeters with some retail back-up is ever CarGiant, and know I don't work for them.

If you want to use the auction route the Manheim and Britich Car Auctions are your best bet.

BCA Blackbushe is very good for such cars. And most come with some form of pre purchase inspection, Manheim at Colchester also do this, with an A4 piece of paper with the report findings on it stuck on the side window.

My only complaints are that I wish I had bought the Powershift Auto version, going for that would be the only reason I would sell this car, unless I got offered a company car. ANd the Volvo comes with a bigger steering wheel than I prefer, Focus has a slightly smaller chunkier one, but that is being pedantic.

I also found the seats in the Volvo more comfy for my bad back.

Don't know much about the 1.8 tdci also fitted, except that is seems tro come with the five speed box like the 1.6, if it is a bigger version of the 1.6 then I would aboid, the 1.6 diesel is also fitted to citreons and has proved troublesome there also.

I do know that the accepted trade view is to steer clear of the 1.8 tdci mk4 Mondeo but have no concrete information on that.

The 2.0 tdci is 136 bhp like my Volvo, and it is a pretty quick car for a run of the mill family estate.

The 1.6 doesn't seem to provide the fuel economy that was promised either, they were used as lease cars by a lot on middle managers in my orevious NHS Trust and they all moaned about only getting high 40's low 50's, certainly not the high 60's that were mentioned in the blurb.

My brother has the 2.0 newer spec Mondeo and loves it (apart from the assisted steering)

I am edging towards the 2.0 over the 1.6 - thanks for the info on the Volvo. I'm not sure I'd want a Volvo though - I'm only 22 with a choice of cars and driving a Volvo would make me sad inside.

But in all seriousness, I would choose a Mondeo over the V50.

That's great - just the information I needed. Do you find that the acceleration is better than the petrol? That was my main gripe with the 2.0 petrol, it could sometimes be a bit 'lazy' in 2nd gear. (that's not just from my driving, promise)

If the Mondeo Estate is not too big then they are a very good buy. Reliable and spacious.

And due to the numbers around very reasonable in the price department.

Huge numbers of ex fleeters in auctions or in dealers.

Don't be scared of highish miles with decent history and one owner ex lease type vehicle, preferable just been disposed of by the lease after handback.

They aren't popular minicabs for nothing.

I understand fully with your thoughts on the Volvo, but the V50 is a good looking car, I went to the auction to buy a mondeo or vectra estate, but after three trips kept getting outbid, such is the popularity of these types of cars.

Can't help but think you may find the Mondeo a better long term proposition, you certainly won't need anything bigger, the seata are much nicer than anything in a Focus.

Don't expect 55mpg and you wont be disappointed.

I get that out of my 2L TDCi 140 Mondeo. I'd expect at least that and more.

Well my 2l tdci focus never got near there - neither did the 1.8 tdci I had previously. Obviously that's only my experience though

I may have been unlucky but I'd never touch a Diesel Ford Focus again.

I absolutely love the Focus and decided to update my trusty S reg petrol for an Ford Focus 07 plate 1.6 TDCI Zetec Climate. It had a full Ford service history, fairly low mileage (60K), and on paper looked great. However within 6 months of owning it a cheap plastic clip holding the turbo pipe broke and sprayed the engine with oil. I took it to Ford and asked them to fix the pipe. They phoned me and saying it needed £1,800 of work done to it! The injectors were shot and needed changing. I went to a Dealer Approved Mechanic who did all the work for £1,200 but even so it was a huge amount of money.

After this a pheasant run across the road and I couldn't avoid hitting it. Again thanks to cheap plastic fittings this one small bird managed to destroy the plastic under engine guard. Which cost another £59 to fix. Then the boot sensor went and decided to open the boot whilest I was driving! Luckily my dog was in his cage which was anchored to the seats otherwise I may well have lost him. This cost another £106 to fix!

I did get 60mpg from it but the stress and hassle was too much. I was almost pleased when a driver jumped a red light and wrote it off!

It did have some good points. The handling was really smooth and grippy, and car tax was only £90 per year.

I still love Ford but now have a petrol 1.4 Fiesta Zetec Climate. I get 40mpg and no heafty repair bills. I didn't really see a saving from having a Diesel as the cost of it is so much more expensive than unleaded.

Good luck whatever you buy. Like I say I may have just been unlucky but even so it was a very expensive car to repair.

Sounds like it just be a mixture of your driving style and journeys. 60mpg may well be possible if you use your car predominantly for 10+ mile journeys, which to be honest is what I will likely be doing :)

It sounds like you were very unlucky - I think the pheasant was telling you to just give up on that car!

How did you buy the car? Car supermarket, local dealer or private? I always seem to have those kind of issues when I buy from a local dealer - luckily my warranty covered me for the big repairs.

It was a local dealer. The problem round here is that there is a pretty good local Car Auction house and I think alot of Local Dealer stock comes from here. I guess its ok if they know what they are looking for but I'm not so sure many of them do.

My warranty wasn't worth jack. It didn't cover anything that went wrong. Still we live and learn :D
