Haggling Used Car

What is the best way to haggle with a car dealership? Alongside the cost of the retail price (which I doubt they will lower), but how can I get them to throw in a few freebies, eg. a full tank of petrol?
TIA!
TIA!

Ask them and be prepared to walk away, if you don't get it.The measure of love is love without measure0

Don't appear too interested in the car, let the salesman think he has sold it to you. Ask him directly "what discount will you give me if I buy today?"
Decide what extras you actually want and tell (not ask) the salesman he needs to throw that in to make the deal.
As said above be prepared to walk away.0 -
As a general rule, the longer you can keep the salesman talking to you the better, I would suggest not even talking about money or extras until you are well into the second hour.
The more time you can get the salesman to invest in you, the more likely he is to do a deal.
Never, ever be in a rush to do a deal, time is always on your side0 -
When was the car last serviced? When did it last have a cam belt changed? Push for either of these when haggling if they'll be due soon.0

I've said this before but be aware of what the price of the car you are looking at is relative to similar cars on the market.
Dont make a big discount your sole focus - i'd rather have £100 off a £9000 car than £1000 off the same car in another dealers at £10,000.
Also, theres no such thing as 'freebies'. They all cost the dealer money. If you ask him for a full tank of petrol, then its being added in to the price somewhere.0 -

I suppose there isn't.. Was hoping somebody had managed to get a little extra. But suppose it's not like freebies you get when buying a phone...Save in 2013: #166: 9,122.51/[STRIKE]5,000[/STRIKE] 10,000Interest earned in 2014: £257.61 20/04/140 -
i dealt with a decent customer today and to reward him for being nice and jolly and sensible i gave him 6 months tax even though i refused to budge a penny on the sticker price
after the deal was done
why did i do this?
because im a nice guy and nice people always get rewards from nice people
i see it as a two way thing
come to me with wrong body language and playing the big man/woman i wont deal for carrots,so be nice ask properly and if theres room for negotiation then you will get it
it really is that simple if you use an independent garage thats been established a lot longer than some of you posters have been born

It's a game. If it's a fair price, it's fun to play, if it's too dear, and they won't come to a reasonable price, walk away from it. As sb has said though, I've walked away (not just cars) if the seller is playing the big man. There's always someone else selling it. And how they respond is a very good guide as to how they'll be if you need to go back.0

Well then I hope you work at the garage I've been looking at.. So what do you define as "ask properly"??Save in 2013: #166: 9,122.51/[STRIKE]5,000[/STRIKE] 10,000Interest earned in 2014: £257.61 20/04/140
