hey id like to know how you get on with ur ISP. It would be interesting to see there response. I have a feeling it will go along the lines of no speed test is acurate and that you could have other devices on ur network using up band width but hey they might do somthing

You might want to try Routerstats Lite.

    http://www.vwlowen.co.uk/internet/files.htm

This will monitor the download speed and noise margin of your connection to the exchange.
It will not however monitor the speed of the traffic on your connection which may be throttled by your ISP.

It measures the line sychronisation speed with your local exchange and this speed value does not vary at all - until your router does a re-sync with the exchange or you switch off and switch back on the router whereupon it will sync back at a new constant value.

This constant sync speed value is not the download speed and you can never under any circumstance approach the line synchronisation speed number as an achieved download speed.
The maximum real life achievable download speed will depend on circumstance but is going to be around 80% of the sync speed with the internet/ISP/Speedtest site lightly loaded (early sunday morning)

    Edit:
    A real example for you
    Sync speed 8128 kbps
    BT IP setting 7150 kbps
Specially tested download speedtest 7am Sunday morning 7000kbps.
Generally achievable outside peak evening time - around 6700kbps

Have just installed JD's Auto Tester and have set it running. It looks like it's just what I was looking for. Will try it out now and then over the next week.

Has anybody got a recommendation for a freeware Continuous Broadband Speed Monitor? I would like a programme that can test the download/upload speed every 15 minutes and log them in a text/csv file. I've have been googling but there are no obvious "stand-out" contender. My first thought was the possibility of a VBA app for Excel (I don't mind dabbling in VBA) but, again, could not find anything.

And a related question - is there any difference in so called "streaming" tests (such as the tests for BBC iPlayer) and "normal" speed tests? If there is, it's the streaming side I'm more interested in

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I'm sure some people are wondering why you are asking this, though I think I know why and is most probably for the same reasons that brought me to this post..

Are you with Virgin Media by any chance..?

Don't think your getting the service you are paying for..?

BBC iPlayer keeps re-buffering then says "insufficient bandwidth'..?

You do know the thread was over a year old ?

Yes I believe that might be the reason why the OP wanted it.

    Hi

I know this thread is a bit old, but I am looking for something similar to the JD's auto speed tester for the mac - does anyone know of one?

    Thanks all :)
  • I am also looking for a continuous monitor for a Mac.
I have been having problems with BT for over two years now and they have simply say that as long as i have a connection they have fulfilled their contract. I would like to monitor the broadband to see if and when it drops out all together
    Any help would be appreciated
