    Hi guys.

Spent £12 on cat and dog food today, but didnt get round to doing our proper shop as i didnt want to be out of the house for too long.
I am not really eating much since the break in, so i havent spent much at all on food and have actually lost a few lbs as a result.
Every cloud has a silver lining i guess!

Cleggie, PLEASE take care of yourself and try and eat well!! Keep your strength up and look after yourself!! :grouphug:

I've been feeling like I'm missing the point with DR for a while now. My boss recommended it once-upon-a-time and I took one look and figured "you don't pay me enough to shop there!":rotfl: I got a deal through the corporate groupon-style perks website that we have a couple of months ago so thought I'd give them a try. At the time we were using the combi bit of the microwave to do roast spuds and doing the sunday "roast" in the SC so I got pot roast joints. Have to say I wasn't overly impressed - just about worth the money post-deal but list price was  particularly given how small the portions are.

I've been wondering why so many folks on this thread make mention but I think I'm starting to get it. If you get in on good enough deals, I can see why people are going for it. There probably is an argument that its better quality but I don't have a discerning palate (or principles) when it comes to meat so I'll happily stick with cheaper SM meat.

I've never understood, when it comes to things like mince, sausages, etc why people consider different parts of the animal superior to other parts. Why is muscle deemed acceptable but organs are rubbish? In solid bits of meat there is a difference in taste and texture but minced up into sausage or whatever, as long as the taste and texture is acceptable, why does it matter which bits of the animal are used. In fact, surely its better to make use of the "offcuts" for these and leave the "quality" cuts for eating as steak, leading to less waste?

I felt the same.....until I tried their minced steak!! Nothing compares now :rotfl:

As for organs versus muscle, I dont think organs are considered rubbish nutritionally, very good for you in fact.

But the taste.....urghhh.....no matter how good it might be for me, I can detect a smidgeon of offal at a 100 metres

Oh the pleasures of simple food. It was the first time I have ever used them and boy are they awesome. I could eat bowl fils of them with nothing else. The stems, leaves and tendrils taste exactly like freshly prodded peas!!!
    WOW!

Would have taken pics but we wee famished when we got back in and it disappeared too quickly.

Ps, I have now been discharged with my eye. The infection has cleared up and the sight is returning. I have been reassured that if kept lubricated at all times, the cells will continue to heal and repair. :T

    Big relief!!!!

So pleased to hear your eye is improving JJ!! :T Hope your back is better too :j

    Welcome to Newbies!!

Yesterday I made date and cinnamon cake for the first time and it was obviously appreciated by the gannets in my family as there's only half of it left already .

I'm finding that since I started cooking mainly HM food, it's miles cheaper and my family are enjoying it much more. I'm regularly getting compliments on my cooking (was rare before :rotfl:). And the meals I'm cooking are more adventurous and creative - due to recipes and ideas from this thread, using what I've got in and buying YS goods and working out what to do with them. So it's all good - thanks everyone :T!

Okay in the end I finished the month £230 for £250 budget, very pleased even though I did do some silly things during the month. M&S and expensive designer farm shop are the 2 things that spring to mind.

So next month, which will be the July challenge I guess, put me down for £200. EEK!!

    Hi All

Good news about the eye JJ! :-)

£6.09 spent at Mr W yesterday on some veg and sesame oil. Doing a beef stir fry with hoisin sauce tomorrow and chilli on Friday. I've got quite a small portion of mince in the freezer so I'll have to bulk up with mushrooms, celery and carrots, peppers and and chilli beans.

Will still need to go to Mr S tomorrow though to get some mangetout because Mr W was very expensive for this.

Lunch is bagels and tuna mayo from stock, tomorrow will be a ready made for lunch from the freezer. Friday lunch I'm not sure about yet.

Breakfasts have been either toast and jam or cereal - depends on what I fancy :)

The freezer is looking extremely bare and by the end of next week it will be empty I reckon. Just in time for an online shop - I have a free delivery voucher for Mr S which expires on the 5th July so I'll make use of it.

Just caught up with recent posts.

Cleggie - I know it takes a while to get over a trauma like a burglary but I worried your not eating. Have you tried Bachs rescue remedy, I keep some at hand at night and if I wake up and start worrying I have a squirt and it really helps to calm me down. It's not cheap but worth it.

JJ - Great news about your eyes and I think a lesson to us all not to ignore seemingly little things like dry eyes.

  • Morning all!
Cleggie please look after yourself. Hope your new dog is settling in and comforting you a bit.
Penny grabber hope you feel better
JJ great news about your eyes.

Wow got my approved f00d order this morning. I think 60 sachets of cous cous have been added to the larder, loads of bread flour, lentils, noodles and sticky toffee pudding mix from a dishy tv chef ;) too. Had a near wobbly (blaming pregnancy hormones) was looking at the invoice and it had things like love heart sweets, lucozade, snacky mixes and party rings. Well I read on here that someone had their items substituted so thought it had happened to me  but no, turns out they'd put someone else's invoice paper in with mine so all my things present and correct :) glad I checked before I rang up to rant. Was so good not to order snacks/sweets. Anyway is all put away and added to my inventory :) the total will go in the July challenge total.

Should be a NSD here, not going out. Pasta and meatballs tonight with banoffee pie for pudding. Need to make my tomato sauce and do the bananas and cream. Really looking forward to pudding already, will definitely be licking the spoon lol :)

Hope everyone has a good day

    Hi All

Just working out what I will spend next month's budget on. I have a generic menu plan that I like to batch cook for but update it as and when I need to. Normally on pay day I go out and do the "big shop" which I am starting to question why I do this. I stock up weekly and keep a running note in my filofax of what's running low/out as I use it. I meal plan and buy this weekly - stock up on porridge when we run low, same for other things, and haven't missed things I would have bought in the big shop! Struggling to remember what I did used to buy!

So for the coming month I am deciding what meat I will need as I do buy that in bulk still, easier for hubby who gets it for me from work.

How much do the meat eaters out there spend on meat a month pls? We are family of 4 (2 young kids who don't eat much meat except in packed lunches).

    Thanks guys :)

Awww, bless you all, thanks for the concern, but i'll be fine i am sure in a couple of days.
Really need to go food shopping, but a bit unsure about leaving the puppy at home alone.
Might make a list and do it online instead.
