I'm getting charged £1.50 per text telling me the current monthly value of my car. I get 4 texts a month, and cant find anyway to unsubscribe?

Look up the number sending them on the Phonepayplus website

That will give you contact details for the number provider. If it's an 0844 number you may be able to find an ordinary landline number via either the saynotto0870 website, or Google search the address

Call and ask to be unsubscribed, and if you never subscribed in the first place or only did for one quote then ask for your money back

The people you talk to are the phone number provider and not necessarily also the service provider, so they'll pass the refund request on.

If the messages continue, or if the refund is slow in arriving, file a complaint on the Phonepayplus website

Your "free" texts don't cover this type of "short code" text.

(You sent the text, so maybe you are to blame!)

So I see. But it seems unfair to me to charge folk for opting out of spam they don't want to receive in the first place.

But you chose to send them a text! And must have chosen to give them your number too in the first place.

You would have saved the 12p by not texting them, and putting up with the spam, or finding another cheaper/free way of stopping it. (Some would see it as 12p well spent)

With spam, you get rid of one miscreant and another seems to take its place. If you give companies your mobile number, you can expect something!
