Charged for unsubscribing to spam texts

T-Mobile have charged me 12p for a text to 60777, which was to unsubscribe from spam textst from Papa Johns; I have plenty of free texts on my contract.

It doesn't seem right to me that I should pay to avoid unwanted marketing spam, but I've no idea whether I should be whining at T-Mobile, Papa Johns, or just complain to the Information Commissioner's Office straight off.

I wouldn't bother for 12p. My time is worth more than that

It's not just about 12p. Multiply that by all the other people who've been scammed and it will be a large amount. It's a point of principle, and I'm sure the OP isn't worried about his own 12p but about the wider problem of this being allowed to happen.

Your "free" texts don't cover this type of "short code" text.

(You sent the text, so maybe you are to blame!)

Please explain the scam?? There isn't one is there?

The scam is that you have to pay to unsubscribe from unsolicited texts. There should be no charge to the recipient to unsubscribe.

The ICO's the place for complaints about unsolicited text messages.

You've unsubscribed from the firm, so all you need to do now is cease your service with T-Mobile and everything's sorted.
The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life. :)

The 12p was the text sending charge!! Hardly a "scam"!

So who should reimburse the OP's 12p - bearing in mind he chose to send the text (it seems he mistakenly did so because he thought t-mobile included it in his "free" allowance (who do you blame for that?)

Instead of sending the text message, you can instead call the provider on a landline. And ask for your money back if they've already charged you
  • I'm getting charged £1.50 per text telling me the current monthly value of my car. I get 4 texts a month, and cant find anyway to unsubscribe?

Text STOP back to the number that the text came from. It'll cost you 12p or so.
    :footie:
:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p
