Advice needed about a win

Do you have the rules to this comp because if it says anywhere in there that they have the right to withdraw the prize or change the terms etc then I would be very careful in what you ask for ,if it were me I would say that I would very much like to accept the prize I won and can they find anyway to accomodate you adding if not what prize would they be willing to offer instead and see where they start at. I would be careful trying to push things too far as it could backfire . I do agree with McKneff though and think that they would be able to get you access.

I'm guessing it is via this thread: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/3929567

the day.

Congratulations on your win. Sorry to hear you are having trouble.
Firstly, double check that the boat is not accessible. If they knew straight away without a doubt that wheelchair users would not be able to take part surely they would have said that in the T&Cs? Maybe the lady you spoke to just assumed.
If it is a no go, look into other options. This competition has a prize to see the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Pageant from the Sugar Quay Jetty on the banks of the Thames, maybe the Sun could arrange something similar for you? Or maybe a nice night in a London hotel? If there's nothing else you want ask about a cash equivalent.
The T&Cs do state that "NGN reserves the right at any time to cancel, modify or supersede the competition (including altering prizes)" so I wouldn't make any unreasonable demands, it sounds like they want to work it out and give you something so work with them. Good luck, let us know how it goes.0 -
Oops, ok, so in the cold light of day my second post does seem more than a little extreme!
I'm actually one of those people who'd rather ask for something small than risk potentially upsetting the other party, but my opinion got swayed by my OH who is the exact opposite when it comes to this kind of thing, especially as he's seen his sister have to miss out or fight really hard to get what she wants for so much of her life due to her disability.
To be honest, where the accessibility is concerned, knowing the ridiculous scenario's in which OH's sister has been denied in the past, it really wouldn't surprise me if there is none, or they just don't want to make allowances for it. However, if it really is a prize you would have been desperate to take then as the others have suggested it definitely would be worth being absolutely sure that it's not just an assumption that they couldn't accommodate you.
Re compensation, as purple.sarah suggested perhaps best to say you really would love something along a similar vein if there were anyway they could arrange it, and if that's not possible could they suggest something appropriate. If their suggestion isn't something you'd want or isn't practical for you at least you'll have an idea of the value of the compensation they're wanting to offer and you can work it out from there. They do seem keen to make it up to you somehow otherwise I guess they wouldn't have offered so working with them rather than against them would probably be better than my dodgy advice above
Sorry for the misguided advice before
Put it down to an overzealousness to want to help and not wanting to see an MSEr disappointed. :hello:Hello and thanks to all you gorgeous MSErs posting comps, answers and advice xx0 -
Hello Caramel79,
I did check re the boat, I managed to get though to the boat company. They might have been able to carry me plus chain on to the boat BUT I'd have been stuck there from mid day till 6 pm with no access to the toilet. Also there is no access to the upper deck. The boat company was really sorry about it but it's an old boat and although they would like to put in an accessible toilet it's just not possible.
Access in the UK is getting better but there are still so many companies who just don't bother :mad:0 -
I hope you can get something from this already so much good advice. Goodluck.

Thank you all for your help and advice. I have managed to get two friends onto the boat and they are soooo excited.
I'm still waiting to hear from The Sun as to what they'll offer me after making a suggestion or two. I'll let you know what happens0 -

I suspected that might be the case. Even now, I’m still quite naïve about these things, and assume, given the push towards equality, that when OH’s sister wants to do things that people will bend over backwards to accommodate her. You do get the odd company who are fantastic but I’m still shocked every time that she’s told “There’s nothing we can do” “It’s health and safety” “Don’t want to cause you any risk or discomfort”. They are often apologetic about it but it doesn’t make it any the less frustrating or upsetting.
You sounded so disappointed in your first post that you weren’t able to go. Getting your friends on the boat was such a supersweet thing to do. I really hope you get something extra special from them to make up for it, purple.sarah did have some great ideas.:hello:Hello and thanks to all you gorgeous MSErs posting comps, answers and advice xx0 -

That is a shame. They should have stated it was not accesible from the start but they obviously didn't think. I only realised how difficult the accessibility issue is when I was planning my wedding and trying to find an accessible venue because my BIL's GF at the time was in a wheelchair. We viewed several that just weren't suitable, including one with a really steep ramp of doom that didn't have a disabled loo and one where the only access was via an undignified electric wheelchair which could climb stairs, it looked like a fairground ride! Before that I didn't realise that disabled access and disabled facilities were different, so that there are some places where a person in a wheelchair can get in the door but not go to the toilet! You'd think it would be basic for companies to provide these things! I really hope they give you something nice to make up for it.0 -
I'd be a right nasty so & so about this, my first thought would be "How much would the mirror pay for a story like this" :rotfl:
Hope you get a happy ending either way OP0
