Card Protection Plan (CPP)

Hi

Does anyone know if this is worth having.

I signed up to it once but notice that they are taking £29 per year from my account - I'm not sure whether it is even needed.

The company - Card Protection Plan Limited - https://www.cpp.co.uk - when I got my A&L credit card I must have agreed to this at the start.

If its not really needed - I want to cancel it - can anyone advise?

Thanks.

Find out what you are actually paying for - get the T&Cs.

Then decide whether you can "do it yourself".

If you could, is the potential inconvenience of doing it yourself outweigh the actual amount you are paying each year.l
  • It's worth having when the horrible happens and your cards are stolen. One call to them and they phoned round all the companies when my bag was snatched which saved me loads of time on the phone. They also offered to cover some of my losses when I had no joy from the bank. Check out the terms and conditions. It is one of those insurances that if you pay it, chances are you won't need it but if you don't you'll lose your cards or get them stolen. It's really up to you as whether you feel this is worth paying for some piece of mind. They also send out key fobs so that an honest soul will post back your keys to a PO box if found. I had great service from them but you hope that you never need them!
Now debtfree except for the mortgage!
  • You get extra bits aswell.... lock replacement if you get lcked out of your home. passport cover abroad and that proce covers 4 people at your address and their cards
  • As well as the other things mentoned here... they will give you an emergency cash advance of up to £1500* while abroad if you loose your money, alongside support for emergency travel documents and they cover the fraud excesses which some companies still carry etc.
I would also like to add that their IPA (identity protection alert) far outclasses most other availiable products in the field, so you may wish to take a look at that!

It's rubbish, you're throwing your money away, cancel it now!! Ask yourself, why were they so keen to sell you it in the first place, it was hardly for your benefit, was it?;)

It's generally nothing you can't do yourself - typically all you need to do beforehand is take a photocopy of both sides of all your cards, and use the photocopy for reference should you need to. And if the +44 numbers aren't on the cards themselves, write it on the photocopy.

How many cards is it actually covering? 1? 2? 10? 20?

What 'extra's' does it offer? Are you ever likely to use them? Are they worth the fee you're paying (since ringing up the companies for most people shouldn't be that much of an effort, the fee should be covering the extras.)

  • My wife insists that we have this type of cover. Her purse was stolen a few years back, but she was covered by one of these policies. She got money spent on the cards back and replacement cards ordered.

We're with CPP, if you pay for three years it's £70 rather than £87 by paying every year.

This happens whether you have this cover or not. It's a requirement on the card issuers; not something extra you get for having the cover.

Colour me cynical, but if you do all the (minimal) legwork yourself, you can save an extra £70.

It does have its benefits and its more that just protecting your cards. Overall its down to you if you think the benefits outweigh the costs. However personally I didn't want to spend money on it and no have intention doing so in the near future.
