Son using debit card
Comments
-
I have read a similar story to this where a debit card was being charged for purchases made in on-line games by a junior member of the household..
In that particular instance the debit was being made against the account for the "purchase" via the XBox site of extra players in an on-line football game.
The wording of the instructions for the game was such that the son did not realise that he was purchasing the players with real money - he thought that he was "virtually" purchasing them within the game and he did not understand that a bank account was being charged.
Perhaps it might be best to investigate exactly what has happened, as it may not be his fault. (I think that age and streetwiseness will have a factor in this.)0 -
yes i know i am calming down now, i will have a chat with him before deciding what to do0

LOL
I'd be the same !!!
Was just thinking it might be an opertunity to teach him about money (always amazes me how must haves suddenly aren't so vital when coming from their own stash instead of from me)

AFAIK There is a mechanism for certain retailers to continue to debit accounts even though the original card number is no longer valid, prevent problems caused by bounced payments.
For example, you wouldn't want to be found driving without insurance because the card which you had agreed with the insurers to be used for an automatic renewal had been reported lost, and the insurers cancelled the policy, would you?
I don't know whether this is limited to certain suppliers or not.
So simply declaring the card lost is not guaranteed to stop it being used again. You need to speak to your son.We need the earth for food, water, and shelter.
The earth needs us for nothing.
The earth does not belong to us.

With respect, I've seen those kinds of stories touted around before and they're always complete !!!!!!!!.If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything0 -
Tell him the cancelled card will cost £30, and he will have to pay it off by doing all the vacuuming and cleaning at the weekend for the next 3 weeks.
I promise you he will never do it again.
everywhere, diagnosing it incorrectly and applying the wrong remedies.

maybe, just maybe hear what the lad says first before hanging him?0 -
Re the xbox theres no need to actually enter card details on the xbox as you can buy the points etc from websites or shops.0

Haven't read the thread so sorry if this has already been said.
Cancelling the card won't necessarily stop payments to Xbox, it sometimes sets up a recurring payment that requires a phone call to stop. Also, in your son's defence, he may not have realised what he has done as when 1 month subscription to Gold is purchased a recurring payment is set up with very little warning! I have made the same mistake!0 -
Banks now accept 'stop' instructions on CPA's so ring the card services part of the bank to stop any further payments.
Cancelling the card will have on effect whatsoever.0
