Thanks Pollycat ... I'm hoping that he's enjoying a fabulous life somewhere lovely. It would just be nice if he popped in to say, "Hey Mum, I'm okay!"

We've had 3 cats go missing. All were chipped. It's heartbreaking, wondering if they're alive or dead or lying injured somewhere.

We also had a stray adopt us and she was with us for a year. She prefered being outside and only came in if it was snowing or during torrential rain, and even then it was under duress! She was hit by a car one night in the lane and although it was heartbreaking bringing her back, she's now buried in her favourite spot in the garden.

OP, you did the right thing. (((hugs))) to you and RIP Kitty.

    Awww Poor kitty xxx

Did he/she have a collar on/id tag. If I didn't know who the cat belonged, I would certainly want to take it to the vets to scan for a microchip.

I'm sure if he/she was microchipped, the owner would want to know that the cat had died.

We have had 4 of ours hit and killed almost outside our house in the "30mph" doing well over that speed. 3 drivers just left them there (the murderers) and it was drivers behind who stopped and did nice thing. One was chipped - only had her for a few weeks and she was just starting to trust and settle down as well. But we saw it happen. The other 2 were long before chips were popular. Arnie was the one cat I'd had a long time and he was road savvy, but my OH had parked his car on the road, normally on drive and we think he thought car was on drive and so safe to walk around. His head took all the damage and that person should be condemned for just leaving him there. He died in my arms. Still miss him now. And that was in 2006. It is thought he was 15 years old at that point. No one knows as he was a rescued stray from woodgreen in 1994. Various vets gave us estimated age based on teeth one said 6 another said 2 1/2.

You did a lovely thoughtful thing, there are some good people out there I have lost 3 cats over the years on the roads and every time someone has reported it to the local rescue/vets who contacted me or let a note on lamp posts.

However there have been a few times where my stepdad has picked up dead cats from the roads and took them to the vets, he would never just leave them there as knows how it would feel to not know.

The man in the car may not have been a careless person he may have been very squeamish but who knows, my stepdad has always worked on farms with cows etc so not something that would bother him.

On a lighter note Had a cat who went missing for 7 months, he came up to the door like he had never been away so I let him in thinking it was his twin brother and took me about 5 min to twig it was missing cat :o
  • my cat jazmine went missing for 2 years she came back with the same collar on i put on her verry torn and tatty and tight, covered in fleas to the point you could see them crawling about fighting for space to dig in and if you picked her up your hand would have a few on it, she just jumped in through the window as per usual like my other cats, walked upto to food and started eating like no tommorrow, i twigged it was her almost straight away picked up a towel and wrapped it around her to stop the spread of fleas and to protect myself from her if she was hurt and lashed out, i bather her straight away, and dropped flea drops on her kneck put worming solution down her throat, then she left me with a dilemma, i thought she was gone for good, so i had no space here for her, fortunately a neighbour fell in love with her, and it was mutual jaz loved her fusses everytime she visited and was the only one who she got on with appart from myself, my neighbour took her and is still with her, she's even a converted indoor cat now so hold up hope she may still return.

OP, its not funny to see a animal suffer, and as it was a quick passing, there was limited suffering the cat faced, you did the right thing, and took the animal to the vet to be identified so at least someone out there will know what has happened.

At least you helped that poor kitty as much as you could and also helped it's owners.

My cat Buddy was missing for weeks, but unfortunately when I found him somebody had poisoned him and I had to have him put to sleep :(

One of the reasons why I could never bring myself to have another cat.

    xx

You totally did the right thing you gave that poor cat some diginity in the end and a worried family some peace of mind.

I lost my tabby cat a few years ago. Someone called the vets and said they had found her. I called them and they told me they had left her in a box outside our local vets on the Friday night. There is a big sign on the front of the vets saying it is closed Sat & Sun.

I asked her why she didn't take it to the vets early and she replied "what do i care it was only a stupid cat!" Put it this way she is so lucky I only had her phone number
