What a kind thing to do, its so upsetting seeing an animal in distress.I would have done the same thing, and personally think the guy was mean too, its just about having some humility.

Poor little cat... We lost our lovely cat Timmy in 2001 on a main road near us, he hadn't come in the following night and I waited up but he still didn't come in. First thing next morning I went out looking for him and when walking up near the main road by chance I saw the collar of his collar and found him. Some heartless person had obviously hit him and whether they did or someone else did they threw him right into the undergrowth by the side of the road, I could hardly see him. He was in a right state so they obviously hit him at speed. I'm still upset about it 11 years later that no-one took him to the vets, I would have really appreciated it if someone took him to the vets even though he was dead, he was microchipped.

It was very nice of you to do that, it would have meant a lot to me.

    Well done.
I do think that people who can't cope with something would sometimes rather seem mean, than say "I will be late for.....if I deal with this, can anyone else help?" I also think some people worry about being stuck with vet's bills. I think that a "pet person" understands how vets work and wouldn't feel confounded by the idea of finding one and going in.

I was in Denmark once when I saw something similar - and I was concerned because the person who appeared to have hit the cat drove off & I was the only other person about. I was wondering how on earth to cope in a foreign language when an animal ambulance drove up - the other driver must have rung them. I was so relieved I've never forgotten it!
  • Ohhhh this has made me cry (again!) - Jenny I totally agree with the others - there is nothing worse than a loved pet going missing and not knowing what happened to them.

Although finding out the worst is devastating and heartbreaking, it does allow you to grieve - not knowing is awful.

So ..... from me and other owners out there ..... thank you.

You defo did the right thing. I don't have my cat chipped but I am going to get him done after reading this, he is mainly an indoors cat but he does go out now and again so just in case...

Well done, you definitely did the right thing. It's a shame he couldn't be saved, but it's good that people stopped, too. I don't want to cast aspersions on the man who didn't want a dead cat in his car, some people don't cope with anything like that and he may not have meant to sound horrible, just come across that way.

Although it will be horrible for the owners to know their cat was run over, at least they won't be left wondering what happened to him. Fear of this sort of thing happening is just one reason all our cats are chipped.

I found a cat that had been hit one morning last year, he was badly injured and I just didn't know what to do. I stopped the car in the middle of the road, in the dark (with hindsight, not one of my more intelligent moves) and picked him up in my coat. Fortunately I'm on very good terms with my vets and was able to phone them - at 5 in the morning - to meet me at the surgery. Poor little cat ended up dying, but at least he was on painkillers at the end and I was able to find his owners to let them know.

Seeing him staggering about in the middle of the road - and knowing how close I came to hitting him myself, as it was a dark country lane - still haunts me but at least I know I couldn't do anything more. I dread anything happening to any of ours - we're nowhere near a busy road but if they'd all be happy as indoor only cats, that's the way I'd like it.

Awww, poor !!!!!-cat. Thank you for taking him to the vet ... my Boy has been missing for nearly four weeks now and IS microchipped, so I know that if he was hit by a car nobody found his body and took him to the vet. I'd like to be able to grieve, but I still imagine I can hear him meowing at the door and trotting along the street wafting his furry tail around. You did the right thing.
Everything was beautiful and nothing hurt. So it goes.

I'm sorry to hear he's not come back yet, Katie.

I must admit when I replied to Jenny's post, I was thinking about you and all the other posters whose cats have gone missing.

One of my female cats disappeared and was missing for 18 months!
She turned up, out of the blue, very plump, stayed a week then disappeared again - this time for ever.
I'd got another cat by then (I had 3 plus her at the time) so I think she must have found a home where she was being spoilt and decided it suited her better.

    So don't lose hope. :)
