I don't blame you. I wouldn't have even opened it, and I do realise that Pigpen advised you do what you did. :D IMHO use by dates are there for a reason and not just to make you throw away food and buy more.

Linda, I don't have issues with using ood food, in fact it happens regularly. I'm currently using up cinnamon that supposedly went ood in 2006 :D
I haven't cooked haggis for such a long time that I thought I'd better ask. I suspected it was a goner ;)
  • I made some ice cream 3 1/2 weeks ago...usual ingredients, fresh cream...egg whites...egg yolks...sugar...vanilla. It's in a plastic tub with a lid (one of those locky lids where you press the sides down to click), the kids had some when it was first ready, then to be honest I forgot about it! I'm just wondering how long it will be ok in the freezer or is it already past its best?

The time limit for home-made ice cream in a domestic freezer seems to be up to 2 months. And, these times are usually over-cautious. So, it should be OK for a while yet.
If you fold it in half, will an Audi A4 fit in a Citroen C5? :)

it's possible that someone with a wine taster type palate could detect a difference in flavour, but not the majority of us! It definitely won't have gone off in that time. The main problem will be the formation of ice crystals which affect texture.

  • I made vanilla ice cream in August and we have just finished it. It was lovely although it was set very solid and had to be thawed quite a bit before we could eat it.

I would have imagined it would be ok for months to come :)

I've merged this with our food safety thread

Cinnamon wouldn't have a 'use by' date because it doesn't go off.

It would have a 'best before' because the flavour will change with time but it won't do you any harm.

    Hi all

I've found a piece of belly pork in the freezer, could have been there for about 6 months. Is it safe to use or would you recommend throwing it. I don't actually remember when I bought it just know I bought a large piece and cut it in two, freeing one piece for later. My attempts at being money saving never work out :o

    Thanks.
