    so would I, though as ariba said, the kidney beans might need longer cooking;

    there's a thread here about use by/best by dates - there is a difference. I take more notice of a 'use by' but still would eat if it looked/smelt/tasted ok
    ... don't throw the string away. You always need string! :D

    So would I...and have done more than ever now that I am single and cannot always use things by the date on the product and that income is reduced.

    Personally I'd be a little wary of the milk powder.
    The rest will be fine as long as they look ok.

    the custard powder, you could do a new label saying explosive on it-then take it into the street get some goggles and a teaspoon and put a show on for the local children (50p) a ticket and then set fire to a bit , then get them to hold the tin telling them its explosive and it could go off at any time and create a show about it being fun- i saw this from stefan gates lol

    seriously best thing to do is use it then smell it , if it smells ok your fine if it doesnt then bin it

    I'd use them all too, in fact I've probably got 'worse' things in use in my kitchen :D

    you don't need to pressure cook the kidney beans, soak overnight, then a 10 minute fast boil* then simmer till tender, although as ariba10 & rosieben said, they might be a bit tough & take longer to cook

    * don't leave this step out, it destroys toxins in the kidney beans that can make you ill, you only need to do this for them & soya beans, other pulses don't need it
  • Jimmythewig actually the LDS say that freeze dried milk is ok for approx 20 - 30 years

    Morrisons dried Marrowfat peas March 2010
    Birds custard powder tub April 2011
    Tesco value instant mashed potato Jan 2012

    I found some Tesco value instant mash the other day, BBE Dec 2011, and we had some last night. It was fine. Apparently it keeps much, much longer than the date on it.

    The marrowfat peas might take longer to cook, like the kidney beans, but should be fine.

    The custard powder should be fine too.
