I keep it in the fridge for three days max. You can remove the fat which forms on the top before using. If you want to freeze it, it's best to do so asap.

I'll add this to our food safety thread later.

The fat is lovely for roasting vegetables in.
I will leave mine for 3 days, it freezes no problem and you can use it from frozen in soups and casseroles. :)

I left my rice cooker in a corner of the kitchen for over a week, and just looked in it, and I had forgotten to clean it. :o

Its full of a poisonous looking White, Green, and Gray hairy looking mass.

I was going to throw it, but need to cook rice tonight. Would it be ok to use if I cleaned it out thoroughly, and left a weak bleach solution in the bowl for a good few hours? I use it a lot, and have never had this happen before.

I know there is a poisonous toxin in rice, but surely bleach, and a proper cleaning would eliminate the problem?

    Hi Missli,

I think that with a thorough cleaning it will be fine. Just make sure that you rinse it well in cold water after using the bleach so there is no residue to taint the rice you're going to cook tonight.

spot on Pink, that's what I'd do too

I once had a friend tidy & wash dishes after a curry night, it was only weeks later, when I noticed green hairy stuff creeping down the side of an earthenware casserole dish, that I found they'd put all the leftover curry & rice in it & not told me

anyway, I cleaned it up _pale_ continued to use it, I'm still here to tell the tale :D

Thanks for your replies! It would be a shame to chuck it, as is so easy to use. :T

  • We are on a tight budget right now and I am doing out my cupboards to see what we have, I am ashamed :o to say that I have some out of date items. I need to know whether they are still okay to eat. I will post more items when I find them so if you could keep checking back to see if I have added anything else I would be so grateful.

All items will be unopened packets etc.

    Right lets get started

Granose meat free burger mix FEB 2011 :o
Granose meat free sausage mix Jan 2011 :o
Tesco value dried skimmed milk powder July 2010 (extremely embarrassed)
Tesco soup and broth mix (dried beans and pearl barley etc) May 2009
Tesco Dried red Kidney beans Dec 2009 (because I was fearful of using a pressure cooker!)

Well I am sure that's enough to going on with but I am sure there will be more.

    Many thanks :T

Would use them all with no worries.

The dried Kidney beans might be a bit hard after cooking.
