If the camera is encoding as H264 your laptop might lack hardware decoding of it. You could try transcoding to something larger and uncompressed that plays back smoothly for editing.

Link - Looks like it's a Pentium dual core 1.86GHz with Intel GM965 graphics and 2GB ram....it may struggle to play AVCHD video.

Maybe be worth doing a manual windows update to see if there's an updated video graphics driver which might improve performance?

Have you actually tried any of the alternative media players we've been suggesting? If not, we're wasting our time.

So far as binning your cam is concerned, if your PC won't play 720p it won't play 720p - it doesn't matter what camera it comes from. In fact, many recent cameras shoot in native 1080p, which is even more demanding.

Could it be something as simple as a low class SD card ? The most recent digital cameras benefit from higher class (ie 10) SD cards to ensure the video files are transferred onto the card properly during capture.

What class is the SD card, and have you tried a higher one ?

Sounds like you have a Class 10 SD card, which is extremely quick and hence not the problem.
