Point taken and agreed, my apologies. If we're comparing bits to bytes all the way through this discussion than it served no useful purpose.

Benod, could you try the adslguide link as SomeOne suggested and provide corresponding output? Even better, could you provide a link to your test results?

Hm... The ADSLGuide doesn't work. The test just appears as a red X.

I went to https://www.PCPitstop.com and they gave me the following results though:

    Download Bandwidth Test Results
Download speed: 286 kilobits per second
Test details: 402 kilobytes downloaded in 11.25 seconds.
    Receive buffer size: 256960 KB

What I don't understand is why it says my download speed is 286kbps when I have never reached anything near to that speed when downloading.

Like I said above, the two are in different units. Kilobits and Kilobytes are not the same thing they are different by a factor of 8. A byte is 8 bits. When you are downloading something, the software tells you the speed in Kilobytes per second.
Basically there's nothing wrong with your connection.

    SomeOne - spot on :T

Benod - If you get red X, you most probably need to install java virtual machine. Go to http://www.java.com and follow installation instructions.

    402 kilobytes in 11.25 seconds
    = 402x8 kilobits in 11.25 seconds
    = 3216 kilobits in 11.25 seconds
    = 3216/11.25 kilobits per second
= 285.87 kilobits per second (pretty close to 286 kilobits per second)
