Hi everyone,
Appologies if this is in the wrong forum area - I thought this forum looked the most suitable for my problem.
I currently have NTL's 300k unlimited broadband, however it never reaches speeds over 30 kbps - in fact I'd be lucky to even get that speed. I'm pretty sure the connection shouldn't be that slow... should it? Is there something wrong with it? Please help.
Thanks in advance,
-Ben

Do you have programmes such as Kazaa running? Have you a BitTorrent client running? Make sure all programmes which use the internet are turned off.
Then go to http://www.adslguide.org.uk/tools/speedtest.asp run the test and post the results here.0 -
Have you tried rebooting your set-top box and router?0
-
cifpower - I use Bit Torrent and a program like Kazaa from time to time but even when they're not on it still has the very low speed. I'll try the speed test in a minute. I'm just installing Java to use it.
DVB - Could you please tell me how to do this? I'll try anything to get the speed to what it should be. I'll be getting a new computer on Wednesday... Should I try it then?
Thanks,

What is your setup? Is computer connected directly to the set-top box, or you have some sort of a router?0
-
Connected directly to it...0

Just to be sure - shut down you computer and unplug the NTL set-top box. Wait for 30 seconds and plug the NTL back in. Give it another 60 seconds (or until the middle light on the box stops blinking, if it started when you plugged the box in) and start up your computer.0

Unlike ppl above, I don't think there is anything wrong with your connection.
Due to different units used for what you are told your connection is and what software tells you, there is usually a discrepancy of about a factor of 10.
Unless you notice that web browsing is slow with several windows open then I doubt anything is wrong.
If in doubt you can always do a speed check at AdslGuide:

How is your modem connected to your computer? If you are connected with usb then it will be awfully slow. Buy a network card and use the other cable that came with your modem and connect with this. It makes an absolute world of difference.0
