When you say you are looking for other houses I hope you mean you are looking for house shares or a lodging? Have you gone to spareroom.co.uk and the others to have a look as there are usually tons unless you live in the sticks.

Thanks for the clarification. Just to be clear, at present you need £13k per annum to live on BEFORE you pay rent/housing costs?

Is this £13k just "living costs" (food, beer & fun) or are there debt payments, car loans etc included?

Get over to the Debt free wannabee forum and post a Statement of Affairs. They'll help you get the amounts down (food could go down £100, gas and elec look high to me)

Thanks, I figured I had the wrong forum.

The gas is a guess, based on my previous house, I wouldn't be billed for another 2 months.

Sorry, didn't expect so many replies, it will increase by roughly 6k as I'll have to start paying rent.

I am looking for other jobs and houses, but nothing as come up yet.

I live with my partner, who is also looking for work (she is currently unemployed).

I'm currently spending out £250 for food, drink, cleaning stuff, £50 for water, £120 for council tax, £40 for elec, £80 for gas, £90 for internet and mobiles (can't get out of these without paying hundreds of cancellation fees), £200 for loan debt.

I can reduce food, but not enough that I'll be able to afford rent.

Sorry, the amounts were before tax.

As I said I spoke to the council and they said the total amount of all benefits is a few hundred a year.

Those amounts come to £830pcm, so about £10k a year so what about the other £3k?

To be honest, £250/month for food, drink, cleaning products can be improved on. Does this include meals out, etc?

You are likely to be able to get a reduction in the council tax due to your partner being unemployed.

£50 for water per month. Bottled water?

If you move somewhere smaller, your rent will be lower, and all your outgoings for council tax and utilities will go down too.

You really need a second wage coming in. That would cover the £7000 a year shortfall. A job, any job, will cover it.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

No, obviously that is the water company's bill.

I know that, I'm looking for other housing. I also know I need more money coming in, I can not find anything at the moment. (Well, I can, but I'd have to quit my current ones and then I'd be worse off).

As you have identified, the low benefits you are entitled to are calculated solely on household income, not expenditure, including debts.

As you can't service your loan, see the Direct Gov website for its section on Debt Management or post a SOA on the Debt Free wanabee board where the members there will help you cut costs and come up with a strategy to deal with your debt rather than have it swallow up so much of your disposable income.
