Temp job lied ... now agency blackballed OH

Hi lovely peeps

Well OH got a job with an agency on a temp to perm position. Thought this was fine, company looked good, wages were ok (compaired to £60 a week, it was a lifeline)

Anyway, OH was getting what he thought was good reviews but yesterday received a call saying there was no more work. Was confused as he was asked to go in on overtime due to the volume of work ...

Today he receives a call from the agency to say the company did not want him back because of his attitude!!! My OH is devistated. He thought he got on well, had no run-ins with anyone and was getting praises. Apparently the company said there was 3 incidences and the last was 2 days ago with the production manager. He said to the agency that OH humped at having to do something he was not asked to do.

This is news to OH. He was enjoying doing all the usual jobs and the extra stuff as he was enjoying working with the people.

Anyway, OH was gutted. He felt that something did not add up but he did not want any bad water and decided to go down to the place he worked to offer an apology, to say there was no hard feelings and that he had enjoyed working with them. The manager was "in a meeting" but a message would be passed on.

10 mins later, the agency called to say they had a call saying OH had been down there harrasing them and it was out of order. The agency also said "he worked for them not the company" and he was very out of order and this has left them in a difficult position to now deal with OH as he is obvious a troublemaker! The agency also said that he would think it would be "difficult" for OH to get work now that he is marked for a bad attitude.

I am now left in a position where OH is devistated against his name, has no work and the other agencies who he is registered have said that there is "no work" once he mentioned his name, we have no money coming in so now we dont know how we will be able to feed ourselves from next week.

I am sooo upset! I know I am biase about OH but he would NEVER have an attitude with work ... he was bouncing around like a kid that he found a job he liked and was earning after 16 months off sick.

I dont know what to do now ... how can we find him a job if he is "blackballed" and how can we survive on £6 a month! He is not entitled to money due to my wages.

Sorry I know there is nothing anyone can do but I just had to get it off my chest. I am sooo stressed I cried at work and the boss sent me home early. I now feel silly :(

I guess I will have to post a SOA to see how I can find the money to feed us.

The agency is right, they paid your OH his wages, and not the firm.

Unfortunately for your OH, there's not a lot he can do about the situation. In his position I would organise a meeting with the agency to explain his confusion about what went on - what you've described are 2 different stories so it would be helpful if your OH understood where he was going wrong. To avoid being blackballed, he needs to demonstrate his good attitude to the agency first.

    Hi VfM4mepls

He called back the agency after they left the voicemail and explained his situation and why he went to apologise only, not to harrass.

So far they have not returned his calls and the receptionist he managed to speak to said the person who has been dealing with OH is on holiday until next Thursday.

OH knew it was the agency who employed him but he does not know why the employer is lying, not once but now twice.

He is now drawing a line under it and is going to call the agency tomorrow to speak to the manager. He will explain what happened and ask them if they will not blackball him and hope they will find him some work.

I doubt that an agency would go to the trouble of alerting their competitors to what they think is a difficult (with attitude) worker. It is more likely that there simply was no work for him at the time he contacted the other agencies.

Hi all. Well OH pleaded his case to the agency and explained what happened. They have accepted his apology for going to the customer. They have said they wont blacklist him and draw a line under the incident. They have said they will try and find him some work, but at the moment there is nothing about.

I was just really upset yesterday because they were basically lying about OH. Someone there must have just has an isseue with OH and we just have to move on.

So the job hunting starts over again. He got paid for last week so we have this to survive on. We can do basics on £30 a week so this should keep us going for the next 2 months if need be, but hopefully one of the agencies he is registered with will get him something. He is also going to local companies handing in CV's :-)

Thanks for reading my moan xx

Agencies do not black list you with their competitors. Only themselves.

Also, there MUST be more to this.

Regardless. I say you name and shame the company if you and your OH are adamant that you are right.

Post messages about the company on a few websites then link the websites in an email to the company.

I dont mean you slander them or cause grief, just outline your scenarion and what happened. Obviously call it anonymous.

Agreed, you hear lots of these stories but in reality if he turned up, got on with everyone and worked hard and enthusiastically this wouldn't have happened. After such a long time out of work maybe he forgot what behaviour was appropriate, if he genuinely doesn't think he did anything wrong it's possible he gives off the wrong body language without being conscious of it...

It was probably nothing at all that your DH did.

In my last job a man from an agency worked with us for months, absolutely ages, at least 9 months.
till the manager found out he was epileptic, the manager said to him (in front of everybody) 'I don't want you back tomorrow, your work is below standard'

It was ofcourse a complete lie and we were all gobsmacked but too scared to speak up.

What goes round though, the manager was laid of shortly after in a round of redundancies......

Absolutely pitiful that you didnt speak up. Pitiful. Be ashamed.

Also, maybe he was giving off the wrong body language, but the response that he got was not in line at all.

Unless the OP is over exagerrating the treatment received.....

You just never know really do ya. Some people's natural personality is to be an annoying no-b and this just doesnt go down in a peaceful tight knit work environment.

How could I or any of the others speak up, you don't know how bad that place was.
I am not ashamed that I put my kids first.

An anonymous letter outlining your dismay and also stating the number of colleagues who agree with said letter and then posting the letter to the relevant areas of the business can go a long way.

Its a shame you or anyone else in that place didnt have the capacity to work together and overcome such ridiculousness.

Its like sitting there and taking it...over and over. A hundred and one people can come first if you want an excuse.
