Vehicle engine size and running costs?

With such low mileage, I'd be tempted to get something cheap and ludicrous as fuel costs won't matter much, but you might not want that.
You could get an up to 03 (K16 is it?) micra well under budget, and very reliable.
With regards scrapping the 100, you'll probably find some nut on the MG-rover.org forums who'll buy it for a fair bit more than scrap value. Probably to fit a T16 turbo engine in it or something equally silly.0 -
Its a rover it will be the headgasket.
V6 2.5 litre mondeo??, Pre 2001 so the tax will be aged based not emisisons.
Gentle restraint will see 30mpg quite easily.
Bigger cars can be cheaper to buy and insure, Fuel consumption can be reasonable if you choose wisely, Yet offer something a bit more comfortable/spacious or just plain fun.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

I would also agree with a 2/2.5 litre petrol. Its not as silly as it looks. Large engined cars are cheap as chips as folks can't afford them or 'belive' diesels are a must. Leaving a large selection of fully loaded cruisers for peanuts.
With 2000 miles a year you're spot on for getting the most out of a large engined car. My money is on those Volvo T5, cant remember the name...0 -
The tiny engines aren't even that great for fuel economy these days. They are often underpowered for the weight of a modern car and therefore you need to rev the nuts off them to actually get moving around town, this is less efficient and increases wear.
The Leon is definitely not underpowered and she gets 45mpg.0 -
That's the one with a turbo and a supercharger isn't it?
Bit of an exception given you know I was talking about naturally aspirated 1.2 engines.0 -

Once again folks, many thanks for the excellent replies. I am going to sit down now and go through all the posts very slowly. Lots and lots to think about from the ideas and information given.
When I go on autotrader now, I am going to start looking at the big engined motors that I would have shied away from before. If I can save money getting a large engined vehicle cheaply then that will offset any extra I have to pay for fuel and other running costs. This has totally changed my way of looking at the situation.
Thanks to all.0 -
I guess it depends if you want something that is just for getting from A to B or do you enter something with a touch of luxury, comfort or capable of putting a smile on your face my own thinking would be for the OPs annual mileage would be up to a 5 litre engine, possibly an old 7 series BMW or similar. I do around 6k a year and own a car that does between 8 and 28MPG which is far from great but the car makes me smile and I can justify he cost due to the low miles I do but if I did 2k a year I would be going for a TVR Cerbera which have dropped below 10 grand.0
