W7 min requires 1GB RAM. XP can run on 256MB RAM. However, W7 on 1GB will be slower than a properly-tuned XP on 1GB.

I didn't miss that at all , I'm certain Win 7 would be 'faster' than XP at 1, 2 or even more GB!

It could be of course that the OP has only 512mB of memory , in which case I'm not even sure that Win 7 would install anyway!

My sister has such a machine running XP (another Dell ..) and it is horribly slow!
To be fair a clean install of an OS may have made your friends lappy quicker anyway regardless of the version, as it is a clean install.

Glary is free and does the same job as CrapCleaner, which is also free.

Personally I don`t think buying W7 for £60 odd is worth it.
(W8 is just around the corner)

I did find AVG caused problems mainly because it`s "bloated", so I switched to MS Essentials.
Have you tried Google Chrome, which I find faster than IE9.
Hi 2010, I have just checked up on Glary on a review site, & it said the following!

    “Ripped Off”

I purchased this program under the premise stated that it will speed up my computer. I got my first ever blue screen ever since installing this junk and now I am locked out of some of my programs I use every day. DON'T BUY IT. It will waste your time and money. The programmers need to go back to school if they are serious about writing real programs. Shame on you Uniblue. ...
    Appreicate the advice tho. :A

Nobody yet has mentioned closed' sticky (the second one as we speak) on How to speed up a slow PC

Highly recommended by us regulars, it works and what's more it's free.

Before you spend money on Win 7, there is Microsoft's windows 7 upgrade advisor. Download and run.

Thanks Dave_C. I think I will follow your route first. I am not that well up on PC'S, but if its in plain English, fingers crossed I will follow it. I will post my results, if anyone is interested as soon I have completed:beer:

    1. Glary is NOT Uniblue Registry Cleaner, Uniblue ia well-known for being a load of tosh. Sounds like the reviewer bought (ha!) Uniblue and tried to blame it on Glary.

    2. The free version of Glary Utilities is actually quite good, been using it for years alongside CCleaner with no ill effects.
