Hi all, well my computer is slower than ever now, and I am thinking of investing in actually buying Windows 7 disc. I have had XP for years. Now my system at the mo, has been set up so the running system was loaded onto an "oldish" 40Gig hard drive. With my newer 450Gig hard drive running in tandem, as my save hard drive! So my question is.... If I ditch the old hard drive & just have the 450Gig hard drive fitted. Will the new windows 7 disc just simply load onto the HD & delete all the previous stuff I have had on it? I have saved all my stuff onto an external HD. Oh then can i put my docuements back onto the new windows 7 by errrr converting it?
I have been looking on the net & am interested in buying the disc from e;byer for about 60 odd pounds. There is such a price range?? I only use my system at home, so not for office use. Help please

Before buying and trying to install W7, you should try a good clean up of your PC.
Run Glary and CrapCleaner and maybe change you anti virus to Windows essentials.
Plenty of articles on here and search Google to to it.0 -
Forget about this idea. If it's slow with XP, it will be even more slow with Windows 7.
What are the specs of your PC? Do you have at least 2GB RAM fitted?
It's possible to to install your new OS without disturbing the data by partitioning the HDD and moving the old data to one of the partitioned sectors.0 -

Oh, I will check up on Windows essentials. I am running free AVG at the moment. Does this AV slow the comp down a lot? I have found it ok for years now. But maybe its old hat now??0

If you look at the home page on CCleaner it will tell you the type of processor and how much RAM you have. That gum you like is coming back in style.0

There may be several reasons why yr system is slow:
1. All the crud that builds up over time.
2. the number of processes that are either started at boot, or later
3. the amount of RAM you have
4. malware.
upgrading to win 7 - yr system may not be compatible, run the w7 compatibility advisor http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=20
I would at first address the points above first, as there is no question that XP systems can't be speeded up - have a read of Closed's sticky above about speeding up systems.
40gb hdd is small by todays standards, photos and music soon fills them. Transferring to a new hdd, is not a simple matter of the non-technical; you need to either do a clean re-install of XP, or clone the old disk to the new one. You may need an external hdd enclosure to undertake the latter.0 -
As well as being relatively small, the 40GB disk is also likely to be perhaps 8 years old and will have very slow access times just where you need fast access - for the system files. That problem will be worse if it has not been defragmented recently (or ever).0

Are you sure about that?
I replaced XP on a friends Dell lappy and she says it's never been faster! .. more than happy with it!
It's a Dell Inspiron 1525 with 2GB ram , she even splashed out on the disks from somewhere ..0
