Windows 7

Windows 7 runs much faster than XP. The kernal code for Win7 is much less bloated than XP and is more efficient at retrieving files. I have installed Win7 on 2 of my very old netbooks which were previously running XP and now they are noticeably faster.
2 Gig of RAM and a copy of Win7 should run fast, even on older core2 or atom processors.0 -
I've got a 1525 myself. It's compatible with windows 7, and there are drivers on the dell website. I had w7 running on that since the closed beta version. Also, if you want to see a decent speed improvement, I'd invest in an ssd. The OCZ Agility 3 is nearly half price on ebuyer at the moment. I've got it as my main drive in my desktop build, and it's fast as anything.- David0

Are you sure about that?
I replaced XP on a friends Dell lappy and she says it's never been faster! .. more than happy with it!
It's a Dell Inspiron 1525 with 2GB ram , she even splashed out on the disks from somewhere ..
You missed the part of my post if i asked if they had(or could have) at least 2GB of RAM.
But with a 40GB HDD, I'm not expecting big things.0 -

I think the 1525 came with 2gb as the minimum.
What doesn't make sense to me is that my one came preinstalled with vista, unless they installed xp theirs? (wouldn't blame them really)- David0 -
There may be several reasons why yr system is slow:
1. All the crud that builds up over time.
2. the number of processes that are either started at boot, or later0 -

Many of us are still running single-core processors - and with a 40GB hdd, I suspect the OP is too
A properly-tweaked clean XP install will run fast enough for the vast majority of people, and on less than 2GB ram......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0 -
Hi 2010. Have just checked up on Glary, I see its a utility tool. Is it one of these, that you run on ur comp, then it says to fix all these errors send £30 to ........ I am a little scepticle of these kind of programs. I have crap cleaner, alth I need to update it. Thanks for the reply bt the way!
Glary is free and does the same job as CrapCleaner, which is also free.

Personally I don`t think buying W7 for £60 odd is worth it.
(W8 is just around the corner)
I did find AVG caused problems mainly because it`s "bloated", so I switched to MS Essentials.
Have you tried Google Chrome, which I find faster than IE9.0 -

I didn't miss that at all , I'm certain Win 7 would be 'faster' than XP at 1, 2 or even more GB!
It could be of course that the OP has only 512mB of memory , in which case I'm not even sure that Win 7 would install anyway!
My sister has such a machine running XP (another Dell ..) and it is horribly slow!0 -

Nobody yet has mentioned closed' sticky (the second one as we speak) on How to speed up a slow PC
Highly recommended by us regulars, it works and what's more it's free.
Before you spend money on Win 7, there is Microsoft's windows 7 upgrade advisor. Download and run.
