Ilona. Your tag about don't get things in shops but get them free --

How does getting it free help the money go around and provide someone else with a living? Stupid suggestion

This simply ties up the single staffer doing what you could do yourself if you were not playing dumb. Meanwhile other people are waiting to have their booze verified or something. Think about it and grow up.
I try extremely hard not to use them. They are only there to do staff out of jobs, one person "serving" 6 people at once.

I know the staff know this too, as every time one of them asks me if I would like to use the SS checkout, I reply that I will if they show me how to use it. They never do, they just tell me to pack the bag an whiz the items through themselves. I get to put the money in the slot, and get told how easy it is, but I never actually see what they did or learn how to do it myself.

I know I could do it myself if I wanted to, but why should I when there's a nice person at a checkout nearby with a big smile for me and some human conversation.

How they managed to set up a system so much worse than all the others is a mystery

But they are not tied up, they are doing the job they are paid to do, if I did it myself would the supermarket continue to pay their wages for sitting doing nothing?

I' not playing dumb, I'm helping to keep someone in a job.

And what has that got to do with me? I am in the queue at the checkout, someone else is at the ss checkout waiting to have their booze verified or something, what has that got to do with me? Why are you implying it is my fault?

It's you who needs to think about it and grow up, only a child would write what you wrote.

And this is our problem because?

For the reasons I already explained in my post. Items can end up out of stock when customers keep putting them through as something different, that's how it can be a problem for the customer. And besides, why be nasty and create all that extra work for people just because you're too lazy to take the extra second to press a button and look something up properly? I might not work in a supermarket anymore but having been on that end of it I know how fricking annoying it is when customers do stuff like this and never do it myself.

...and this is basically stealing, is this really what MSE is condoning these days?

    <pedant> It's fraud, not stealing </pedant>

You're not actually depriving anyone of a tangible thing, but you are obtaining goods or services by false representation. Punishable by up to 12 months in prison.

I don't work for MSE, but I sincerely doubt that they condone the post you quoted.

But the question asked is " have you used your own bag" and as I am not using anyone else's the answer must be yes.

If I could, I'd try to get them out of that job and into something a lot more fun - unless they consider blipping bar codes off a conveyor belt fun that is :) Channelling the Doctor here: Humans can do so much more! They can be so brilliant!
