"Unexpected item in the bagging area..." AAARGGGH. It's meant to speed things up, but can make you want to pull your hair out. So we want tips for smooth self-service checking out.

I once proudly checked through nine items at Morrisons self-service checkout without a glitch or need for assistance. I'm almost tempted to put it on my CV

My one tip for you is before you start scanning, ensure you pre-seperate the plastic bag so you can put stuff in without delay.

Now spill your beans (not literally obviously, though that can happen if you don't pre-seperate)

Use the handscanner on the side of the monitor if there is one, it's lots faster.

I try to avoid them, i hate self sevice scanners, so much so I am in a challenge to avoid supermarkets for the month of May. Thats not the real reason but its good enough. I shall keep an eye on this thread for any further tips.

Wait for the computer to register the item you just put in the bag before trying to scan the next item.

It really annoyed me that it wasnt quicker, but i then realised how silly i looked to others cos it still wont speed up if you wave your things over it frantically!!! Hee hee

I hate the darn things. If I have to use them I ask the assistant for help, chuntering about how much I hate them and don't want to use them. I whimper and moan, and act dumb, then throw a wobbly when it doesn't scan properly, and tell it to shut up when it keeps repeating the same stupid message.

My tip. Only use them if you have just one item which isn't age restricted and you are paying by cash. 2 or more items they are a nightmare.

Use the navigation menu to mute the voice. This is much less stressful and you can just follow the on-screen prompts.

Totally agree. Like everything else in the Morrison's they look like they are from the dark ages. So not user friendly and the staff are just as incompetent at fixing them. I remember once it kept declining my card and it had to be put through on the mini-till the assistant has to sort things out.

I always use them when in M&S or Sainsbury's as they generally work fine if you use the correctly. Most of the issues arise from people who don't follow the procedure correctly and remove things from the bagging area and then kick off! Annoys me and sometimes I wanted to shout at them. Anyway, the only problem I have is when asking for cashback and if there is only one person helping out and loads of problems it can take a while. Thankfully when in M&S my staff discount no longer requires approval since the latest till software updates.

I find flapping the items around, in a totally unstructured way, seems to find the laserbeam. Don't try to aim for a beam! Just flap the item and you will find it ;)

Although, a happy tale. I once was shopping on what was one of the pre-holiday days in winter, where all the food is dropped below 10p in an effort to sell before xmas break.

I found a large bag of potatoes for 7p, but struggled for ages at self service because there was no barcode, and no human tills open.

A supervisor and another staff member spent 10 minutes faffing around trying to input a price before the supervisor said...."7p?! I'm not spending any more time on 7p! There you go, merry xmas!"

    Best roasties ever :D

I try extremely hard not to use them. They are only there to do staff out of jobs, one person "serving" 6 people at once.

I know the staff know this too, as every time one of them asks me if I would like to use the SS checkout, I reply that I will if they show me how to use it. They never do, they just tell me to pack the bag an whiz the items through themselves. I get to put the money in the slot, and get told how easy it is, but I never actually see what they did or learn how to do it myself.

I know I could do it myself if I wanted to, but why should I when there's a nice person at a checkout nearby with a big smile for me and some human conversation.
