One self scan in the Sainsburys I shop says this when I just pressed the start button with nothing in the bagging area. Cashier then has to verify fresh air!

Means the scale is not zeroed.

You should find a zero scale button somewhere on the machine, press it. Alternatively if it has a "I brought my own bag" option then use that even if you don't have one, and it will assume the extra weight is your bag for life.

I have caught customers doing this as seen in the previous posts - new potatoes (£3/kg) with carrots (85p/kg) and worse - a joint of beef (I think it was £8.99 a kg at the time) with onions (85p). I say to them 'That is not (product that they have selected instead what they have bought)' and voided it off and weighed it with the correct product(and with the beef scanned the barcode).

    .

I can honestly say that I'd never even thought that people would select other items so they could pay less - really, I'm amazed.

Does make sense now to me why the sales assistant rummaged through my veg when the machine wouldn't accept the last item I scanned - even when they were clearly visible on top of the pile (I often use a box). We discovered that the children at the next till had left a hairbrush on my bagging area & so changed the weight.

I know now that I'm going to feel really guilty next time the machine beeps, thinking that the SA might be thinking that I'm thinking of trying to fiddle something - I'm like that in the 'nothing to declare' lane at Customs too :D .

Do the self-scan machines accept £50 notes?

    Good question.

If you actually have a £50 note at the moment, please try it and report back. Would be useful to know if this is a valid way of getting rid of 50s.
  • Sainsburys machine wouldn't accept it and there was a small symbol confirming this where you enter the note
