I would pass them onto a rescue rather than throw them away :)

Although I appreciate you not wanting to waste expensive meds, and in your place I would probably be thinking exactly the same thing, them being already opened is a problem.
I realise this sounds horribly suspicious and I apologise in advance, but given that there are some very strange people out there, unless I knew the source personally I wouldn't want to accept opened meds (either as an individual or a group). Too much risk of tampering with it. I want to be 100% sure what my pooch is getting.
Sorry, but that's how it goes.

Which is why I said in my original post "would anyone want them?"
also while I say opened, with regards to the Vivitonin its only the outside box, they are still in the package that you have to individually pop out each tablet,
the Rimadyl came in a tub of 90, sorry I had to open them to be able to give them to my dog

I'm actually sorry I even asked now

Please don't bin the meds. Some rescues abroad might be able to use them, and may have people visiting from UK who can take the drugs out with them (rather than posting.)

thanks for your pm, I've emailed the addy you gave me, if she replies then hopefully they will be bound to Katmandu, I'll give her a couple of days if she doesn't reply I'll bin them
A heap big thank you to everyone who posts the comps, your all stars!

I passed mine back to the vet - they had a couple of 'resident' cats who were both on medication.

My old vet has just retired but he used to take back medicines and donated them to a charity that took in old animals.
I don't think the new vet will be doing that though. Perhaps your vet might have some charity he helps, such as cats protection etc?
Might be worth asking, or asking any local rescues rather than binning them, that seems such a waste.

I've already spoken to my vet, any unused medicines go in a bin they have to be destroyed in a proper manner

Here is the place that would probably love all your unwanted vet drugs (this includes things like Frontline etc):
    http://www.hartnepal.org/help/index.html
    Himalayan Animal Rescue Trust

this particular page shows the wish list of what they would like. If you click on Barbara Webbs name it gives you her contact details in UK. She can then find out if what you have is what they want! The drugs are taken out by visitors to Nepal.

Often small local rescues (as said before) have long term inmates on such drugs and would be very pleased to get them. No one is going to administer such things without veterinary advice.

And what I meant to say before, I was in such a rush to stop the binning process!
I am so sorry to hear that you lost your dog, this doesn't make it easier but at least the drugs that are left can help some other animals.
    Take care

I think rescues probably will view it a different way- they are cash strapped , so if anyone is going to offer them expensive drugs and they appear to come from a reliable source, someone who no longer has their pet, me thinks the charity will be grateful.
yep we know there are strange people out there, but luckily they are a small minority

What are the meds for? I ask because I have passed on unwanted drugs to members on Yahoo user groups...ie Hyperthyroid groups etc. Sorry, I don't care two hoots if it is illegal, if I can save waste and help someone out who may be desperately short of funds then I am happy to do so.
I also recently gave a bunch of stuff to a (lovely ) small cat rescue, they told me they were unable to officially ask for such things with their newsletters or appeals but were EXTREMELY glad to receive them if offered in person.

It's a great sentiment but two of these drugs were specifically prescribed for the dog following an examination by a vet. I'd hate to think that someone without training or qualifications might give these drugs to another animal only to cause the dog more harm than good.

Do you seriously think people are going to administer such drugs without veterinary say so?
I must say that would surprise me- certainly rescues have huge vet bills (generally)- they know what is prescribed- maybe this way they are helped out for a month, or so.
Drugs going to Nepal are certainly administered by vets- just see the website
