Leave Cable Internet provider for ADSL phone connection to reduce costs?

Hi all

I feel we have a bad deal. We receive cable internert fron Virgin (now £25 pcm, originally £10 pm in 2005) and telephone from Primus over a BT-rented line. Total monthly pay is usually £60 - 70 pcm. BT charge us penalties as we forget to dial through them using the special cotact number during the billing period so they penalise us.

Now my wife and I are retired, my wife watches a lot of YouTube and sometimes but irregularly old movie downloads.

Will leaving cable for telephone-line delivered broadband seriously affect the DL speeds? Should we wait until September when BT says our exchange (Parkstone, Dorset) will be upgraded to receive Infinity? We need to control our phone/TV/Intrernat costs.

  • Considering that i'm paying £22 for line rental and 13meg broadband, at least I would be if I weren't getting it free for 6 months, I'd say that you were paying well over the odds!

Most people use Primus for cheap line rental and some other calls provider for the calls, you seem to have it the wrong way around!

In order to see what kinds of speeds you'd expect from the BT line you'll need to login to the router and post the stats, from that we can determine what speeds you should expect.

The OP is on cable for internet, so that won't work.

    Thanks BJ Davy

Ww chose Primus for telephone calls only (not line rental) so we kept line rental with BT as we understood that they would maintain the line (at least up to the pavement junction box) in case of damage, etc. Is that erroneous or has it changed? What about Infinity when it appears in our area (September according to BT website)

Is Virgin the only cable-internet supplier. Will moving to copper-delvered internet seriosly affect DL speeds and cost?

With ADSL your internet connection speed is dependent on your distance from your exchange. The price you pay will be more if its a market 1 exchange and has no LLU operators.
Shirley you would get a better deal with Virgin if you took the phone as well as broadband with them?

Before you do anything check your ADSL options on Samknows.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

Before BT upgraded its network yes, but now hey BT speeds are almost on par with most Virgin speeds (area dependent) Virgin do 100MBPS so do BT & rebadged BT resellers (Talk Talk sell upto 80MBPS Fibre for £15, 40MBPS for £10 more than standard TT speed/price - its a BT Infinity resell package, although TT customer service is shambolic as ever)

Virgin prices are expensive, unless your mainly calling 01/02/02 landlines & Virgin mobiles.

Primus line rental only is £6.79 a month (do you qualify for BT Basic at £14.50 a quarter ?), add broadband (also maybe unlimited landlines) & voip calls over the internet ?

Do you have mobiles ? Discounted broadband is avail to o2 & Orange customers on payg or contract.

Give me a full breakdown of ALL bills on average (landlines, mobile calling, premuim number (0845/0870 and any others) , including any mobile usage payg or contract, & broadband speed and I'll try figure out a good deal.
