To be honest the places we have decided are on are more or less fixed.
In that case, private pool and real luxury sea view accomodation in the Maldives or the Seychelles I would forget right now unless you can add another couple of grand for eats/drinks/spa treatments etc.
You say that Cancun is a last resort; I haven't actually been but there are many other places on the Caribbean coast of Mexico that look far preferable (to me). Of the three destinations that you have mentioned you will drfinitely get most bang for your buck in Mexico.
Bali is good at that time of the year plus your budget should get you either a very good standard of hotel or a private villa with private pool; personally I wouldn't fly for 18 hours to sit and do nothing but you may think differntly!0 -
Would you consider Sri Lanka? We stayed in a 3 bedroom (sole use) villa for 2 weeks with staff to cater to your every whim. It had a swimming pool, totally private by a lake. We did fishing, I had massages at the villa, we chose our food and the chef cooked it. Trips along the lake by boat, Beach 10 mins walk away.Same climate as Maldives, very close.
And it was well under your budget, inc flights for 2 weeks, this was last September too!."If you see someone without a smile, give them yours.":DMiss Mona, The Best Little *****house in Texas0 -
We did 4*+ in the Maldives for a week in resort + travelling days all inclusive in our own villa for only a little over your budget. If we had gone half board and hotel sea view room rather than villa, it would have been well within your budget. In our case to keep costs down we went with Thomson rather than flying with a national carrier. Kuoni had our hotel for over £1,000 more!

Have you had a look at Moon Palace in Cancun? No in room pools (but an in room jacuzzi), $2,500 of resort credits to spend how you please (golf, wet and wild, spa, upgraded wine list, special meals, trips). Completely all inclusive including 13 restaurants and in room optic dispensers, 24 hour room service. You should get change out of £4k.

The beach is a little iffy at times due to seaweed problems but loads and loads of pools. The rooms in the Moon Grand are huge. It's also very close to the airport so the transfer is 10-15 mins at most.Thinking critically since 1996....0 -
Have a look at a few of the hotels in Playacar in Mexico - it is on the caribbean coast but away from Cancun, very nice place.
Also, have a look at the Rose Hall Hotel in Montego Bay, Jamaica. We spent a couple of weeks there and it has to have been the most relaxing holiday we have ever had! What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0 -

Thanks for adding that bit - it was a few years ago we went and was having trouble remembering where.
Just another note - we went swimming with dolphins when we were there at Puerto Aventuras (I think!!) and it was wonderful! What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0 -

Not a pool, but a hot tub, in a secluded private garden in Meeru, Maldives. Jaccuzzi Land Villas only 10 steps from the beach.
Should be within budget (just !)
