Regarding the squaddies, just stay away from the North Camp area and you'll be fine!0

My parents moved house after I went to uni, well they didn't just move house, they relocated completely from Italy, where I grew up, went to school, and where all my friends has just gone to uni in my 'home' town, to Oxfordshire (I was at Oxford so right on my doorstep almost). I didn't like it but at that age, and having left home to go to uni, I never thought of having any say in my parents decision. Of course I coped, yes it wasn't great not knowing anyone where they live but the time I spent there was good quality time with my parents which I have enjoyed, and I rarely spent a whole vacation there anyway in between studying, working, visiting friends and my grandmothers, holidays etc...
Also when my parents did move they left my younger sister in Italy to finish her high school education there. A bit different as she only had 9 months left, but she stayed with a friend of my parents and coped really well with that. In fact given the conflicts my parents had with her, she really blossomed in a different environment.0 -
The tears may not have completely dried up yet, and you've had very good advice, but really you and DH need to decide together whether to move or stay. After 12 years in lovely Cheltenham, my husbands job is being moved to Farnborough Hampshire. Daughter is off to Uni this year and son starting his A level's so most people would say that the timing is good. NOOOOO...my daughter does not want to come home in the holidays to a place where she knows no one. My son wants to continue at his school with his friends. My husband and I love Cheltenham and don't want to go. The houses in Farnborough seem to cost at least £100.000 grand more than here and I don't think we could have the same standard of living there because the mortgage would be so high. We went to visit the area this week. I ended up in tears.
So without meaning any offence why would I want to move to Farnborough - please tell me.
I was in bits for weeks when DH said his company wanted him to move to Sutton Coldfield. Our boys were much younger (in fact I was newly pregnant with DS3) so there was no discussion about whether they wanted to come or not. But I insisted on us spending a week up there before deciding whether or not to move. I really didn't want to at all.
In the end DH was told that he could stay for a few months, which kept being extended, and eventually he was working from home. I had grave misgivings about that, it was a tight squeeze, but we made it work, and there was always talk about the possibility of him moving.
Then they made him redundant! Working from home meant that as long as he continued to get the job done he could job hunt seriously. And he could take the boys to and from school.
He did ask whether he would still have been made redundant if he'd moved, and they said yes. Boy were we glad we hadn't moved!
So do think about longer term issues in between the tears ...Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
we have a story similar to Savvy Sue, DH was asked to move to Epsom(we live in Yorkshire) mixture of commute and working from home for a couple of years and then DH was made redundant. V.v. glad we didn't move!0
