Husbands Job going to Farnborough Hants

After 12 years in lovely Cheltenham, my husbands job is being moved to Farnborough Hampshire. Daughter is off to Uni this year and son starting his A level's so most people would say that the timing is good. NOOOOO...my daughter does not want to come home in the holidays to a place where she knows no one. My son wants to continue at his school with his friends. My husband and I love Cheltenham and don't want to go. The houses in Farnborough seem to cost at least £100.000 grand more than here and I don't think we could have the same standard of living there because the mortgage would be so high. We went to visit the area this week. I ended up in tears.

So without meaning any offence why would I want to move to Farnborough - please tell me.

Well I don't know the area (so why am I replying I hear you ask?) but would make the following observations.

Your daughter is off to Uni.....believe me whilst she may keep in contact with one or two friends, those friends she will keep in contact throughout her life are more likely to be those she meets at Uni. As for coming home, I think she might be spending a fair bit of the holidays with people she meets at Uni rather than with mum and dad.

Son is abit different though but I'm sure he would soon settle down at a new school.....would he consider going to a 6th form college rather than stay on at school? I know I wish I had!

As for house prices what is the relocation package likely to contain? What would happen to hubby if he didn't move - would you have the same standard of living if he didn't move?

Going for a weekend isn't long enough in my opinion - you need to spend at least a week there to get a feel of the place but I guess that would only be useful if the move was being seriously contemplated.

I know how you feel, my work is moving to Basingstoke (Im in Sunny Hastings), houses are WELL out of reach for us (we are both, me & OH, being made redundant) so we are staying put and finding new jobs.

Is this an option for you guys?

  • I used to live in Cheltenham. We moved to Gloucester last year after having our kiddies (its much cheaper in Gloucester). I love Cheltenham too and I can understand why you'd be upset to leave.

I don't really have any good advice for you, but heres a big hug for you!

Yes it is but changing jobs will have a negative impact on his pension. The trouble is he is well paid for this area and getting another job with the same salary will be difficult.

could he not commute each week and find a room to rent for the week in Hampshire? Not ideal I know but it would save the upheaval of a move.

I live about 35 mins away from farnborough and know the area pretty well. you don't have to live in farnborough.there are plenty of lovely villages nearby. though farnborough, aldershot and bordon are all military towns (for now)...the prices are cheaper than living in the little villages and other towns. the outskirts of farnbrough are ok, like cove .

to rent a room in hampshire, you'd be looking at 350 plus a month

I used to live about 10 miles from Farnborough, and I can see why you are upset...Having said that there are some lovely areas around Farnborough, inculding Hartley Witney, Hook, Fleet, Wokingham, Sandhurst, Yateley, Eversley. I would stay away from Aldershot and Camberely though. You will find house prices in all the areas I mentioned quite pricey. When I lived in Yateley and wanted to move house I found it just too expensive, so I moved to Basingstoke (About 15 miles away) where house prices were a lot cheaper. I now live in East Anglia and cant believe the difference in prices up here. I hope that you get it all sorted out, if you need any help with areas just pm me and I will do my best to help, as I have previously lived in the farnborough area for best part of 25 years. Good luck
