Husbands Job going to Farnborough Hants

Comments

  • Hi - I've got a feeling I can hazard a guess at which company is thats moving the job cos I think I work for them too. I used to work from the Farnborough offices and I live in Sandhurst.

I'd agree with others when they say to avoid Farnborough (if nothing else but because the cheaper parts are cheaper for a reason ;) and the nice bits are prohibitivel expensive). I would look in the Sandhurst area, possibly over Bracknell, Wokingham, Crowthorne, Blackwater areas. Definitely avoid Camberley as this is really expensive, as is Frimley. On the plus side the schools/6th Form colleges around here are some of the best in the country.

Feel free to PM me if you want any more details?

  • I grew up in Farnborough and came out ok and in fact my parents still live there. If you are not keen on Farnborough then live in Fleet, it's a bit prettier.

Education wise for your boy, The Sixth Form College is fantastic there, the teachers are supportive and the Principle really cares about people. I came out of there with four A-levels at AABC and beat all my other friends who went to expensive private schools.

The town centre is a bit run-down at the moment but should pick up soon when they rebuild it.

There's lots of use from Sandhurst on here. Sandhurst is a nice town and the drive down to Farnborough is easy enough. Yateley is another town we looked at when we moved from Bagshot, and might also be worth considering. As others have said Aldershot isn't the best place, but house prices are cheaper there.

Farnborough has a leisure centre and a huge B&Q, the town itself isn't great, but Guildford isn't that far away or you could head up to Reading for shopping.

Not sure how far he would be prepared to commute but Farnborough isnt that far from the Berkshire border.

There are nice parts of hants near Farnborough but they may be pricey. Wouldnt recommend Farnborough itself - and be prepared for the annual air show. Noise is horrendous if you are near the airfield and the traffic will also be a nightmare.

  • The Airshow is every two years not annual! And it doesn't go on for very long anyway.

:T I live in camberley about 20mins drive from farnborough, and as others have said it is v.v. expensive to move down here especially to camberley and frimley however they're are other places, blackwater, sandhurst, owlsmoor, dont know about yateley??
Farnborough 6th form i think is one of the best in the country i may be wrong and i'm sure a lot of his friends wouldn't neccasarily(sp) have gone to the 6th form where you are anyway so he may have had to make new friends as it is. plus in reality i dont think you stay friends with all your 'school' friends in 6th form you tend to make new ones.

the town centre is a bit of a nothing but i have heard they're re-doing it the same with camberley so they're will be a cinema, bowling etc....

At the end of the day you have to decide whats best for you and your family..

It's less than 100 miles from Farnborough to Cheltenham, so would it be possible for OH to live there in a flat or similar and commute at weekends? Even if it was for a while, it would buy you all time to get used to it, and possibly even get son through 6th form. As others have said, daughter will doubtless have new friends soon anyway, so she'll see that for herself.

Friend's OH works for MOD, and they decided with the last move (of many!)that he would commute at weekends. Has been doing it successfully for years now, I think they like it that way! :D

we were in that position years ago, would have been a really bad time for kids, but not permanently out of the question. OH refused to commute and turned the job down - I don't think there's a day that he doesn't regret it.

    Just my offering.

Doe syour partner work in the defence industry? If it is who I think it is then the relocation packages they offer are generours and will include an allowance for him to rent in the area for 6 months while he looks for soething more permanant. Not ideal, would allow you to spend some time in the area an dlook at potential places.

Does he have to move or is this for a promotion?

He works in business. I think we would rent for a while as you suggest so we could look around and rent out or sell our house in the meantime. In an ideal world we would stay here for the rest of our lives but another 5 years would be great. We so love Gloucestershire. I have lived in Surrey, Kent, Sussex, abroad and Here and I have been happiest here and want to stay. My mum is buried here, my dad is nearby but not so well, I have a relative who is ill and could need me at any time and the thought of moving breaks my heart.
