Human generated CO2 is only around 3%. The rest are produced from nature.
So, the CO2 tax is nothing but a government propaganda to raise some arbitrary amount of tax from people.

What is amazing is the number of normally intelligent people who've swallowed this 'environmentalist' claptrap. Or could it be that they have enough money for it not to hurt so they don't care?
The whole environmental argument would be so much more convincing if it wasn't used as an excuse to screw so much money out of the population.0 -
Or a non-EU grey import that is over 10 years old. These come in under the old taxation rules too, and mean that you can now get some fun gas guzzling 2002 cars with cheap tax.
I recommend the BP/BL Subaru Legacy STI or the R34 Nissan Skyline GT-R M-Spec Nur as possible starting points.0 -
You can always tell somethings dodgy when they invent whole new "scientific" units to measure it in, like "grams of Co2 per kilometre" instead of just using the one we were already familiar with to measure exactly the same thing. g/km CO2 is measuring EXACTLY the same thing as fuel consumption for a given fuel.
Of course, trying to "green tax" on fuel consumption figures would open people's eyes to the fact that the driver and pattern of use have far more effect on the CO2 pumped out than the car does, which would make a nonsense of taxing based on the car.
Still, if they actually believe their own hype, as the world starts to cool they should be paying US to drive bigger cars in order to hold off the ice age0 -

Regarding pattern of use, I guess that's already covered - the more you drive the more fuel you buy so the more you're taxed.
Only to a point. Someone who buys something small then uses it for their city commute through traffic each day is likely to use more fuel (and so create more CO2) than someone who runs a 2.5 litre for their 150 mile weekly commute on open roads.
The simple solution (if you agree with the green agenda about CO2) is to tax the fuel itself so, regardless of the car you drive, you pay only for the CO2 you produce. But they already supposedly tax fuel highly for just that reason.
To tax the amount of fuel you burn on that basis and THEN tax again based on how you're burning it is on a par with the Old West snake-oil sellers.0 -

The g/km CO2 simply takes the fuel quantity + oxygen required to burn it for each kilometre.
Anyway, I guess with the current drive across the EU to make the new car manufacturer MPG claimed figures more realistic (read: lower MPG) the road tax will go up for all cars across the board. So your 130g/km car will suddenly become a 180g/km car.
