A rice salad is fine for adults, but kids never want to be different, if everyone elses packed lunch is sandwich, fruit, little pack of crisps, etc then you are going to want that too.[/QUOTE]
MMmmm- possibly, although .............. last week DS1 had in his packed lunch
M: Leftover Thai green curry with rice in foodflask
T: Parmesan and pea ristotto in foodflask
W: Hummus, pitta bread and dippers
Th: Pasta salad with feta
F: Red kidney bean curry
I make an extra "scoop" for dinner the night before and he takes the "leftovers" for lunch. Costs me much less that a sandwich, crisp and biscuit lunch and .................. the kids and staff ask him all morning what he has in his flask and the "reveal" moment is always eagerly anticipated.
Occasionally I have sent in an extra flask and they do a little "taster" session where the other kids can try something new.
DS1 is actually quite proud of being the "different" one and tells me that his peers are rather fed-up with their "same-old-same-old" lunches and quite envy him the variety he has.

Some people seem to use threads like these as some kind of political platform which is quite shameful IMO.
I've been looking through some on 'newcustomeronly's threads - for a start they have posted on the Starbucks 2 for 1 thread, then complaining about dishwasher powder, then there is the '12 days of kindle' thread..... 'Yes, I came looking here for info and tips about maybe trying 12 days of kindle - was a bit surprised to see links taking me away! wanted to know if kindle/itunes/ipod are compatible on iphones? '
Somehow I think that all is not as it seems, why would you feed your kids crisps and jam sandwiches as you are so poor while sitting on your iphone and drinking your 2 for 1 Starbucks. And using a dishwasher..... that is electric and powder to pay for when washing up by hand would be far cheaper.
Just saying......
ETA: Quite enlightening really - now butter as well..... And a 3DS for a child's present - sure, it's a gift for Xmas but £150 on ONE present.... how do you afford the games????
LOL. When someone comes along with too much ranting and moaning about living on the breadline as the OP does, sometimes a little browse of other threads makes you realise that all is probably not as it seems.0 -
What a weird thread, politics meets nutrition guide.Life is short, smile while you still have teeth0

My mum used to give me hummous (before most people here had ever heard of the stuff), cous cous, pasta salad and soups for lunches - sometimes kids would be jealous, sometimes there would look at my lunch suspiciously and make silly comments but I was glad I didn't have to eat the same sandwich, crisps and chocolate every day. Now as an adult I'm grateful to my mum for caring so much about giving me a varied diet and interesting lunches. I now do the same 'leftover' lunches you do and it takes less time to cook extra and shove it in a box then it does to assemble a lunch from scratch every morning.
We use boxes and microwave them, but the idea of a food flask intrigues me. Might be good for travelling/having something for the first night of camping/festivals. Where did you get yours?
We had a jubilee picnic at DDs school on friday; we brought falafels, salad, pitta, hummous and fruit. Another mum brought homemade sushi (and even made some vegan rolls for us!), another brought pasta salad...kids were eating all sorts of things. I think now it's much more 'normal' to be eating and trying different foods and cuisines, I think it's a bit silly to worry your child is going to be bullied if they have anything other than a packet of Walkers and a cheese sandwich.0 -
you can get food flasks in some of the big supermarkets, maybe in wilkinsons or robert dayas sort of places.0

Goodness what is this thread about.
It sounds like someone wants to push a political message under guise of food.
There are many good threads out there helping people, but have not before now encountered a political bashing at every new post.
What good is written here is putting me off with the government bashing.
Off to the Old Style forums. Much nicer but same goal of saving money.0 -
Sorry just seen how out of date this is.
Didn't realise it was an old thread0
