It may not look it, but that article is a little out-of-date.

- MGTEK dopisp (costs money; allegedly requires iTunes)

True..but there are still plenty of alternatives to using iTunes for iPods.I shot a vein in my neck and coughed up a Quaalude.

very pleased with my recent sandisk purchase - would prefer to change the headphones - i have tried a pair I already have with rubber on that I find comfy but they distort the sound and the jack (if that's what you call it) is not the same size as the one that came with the mp3 player - how do I work out which size I needThe mind is like a parachute. Another vote for Sansa clip - I have had a clip and a clip zip and they are very easy to use and great value.0

A totally "outside the envelope" idea would be what I use: I have two dogs who need to be walked; their conversation isn't up to much so I tend to listen to music as I walk... on a geriatrric phone. I've got an old Samsung F480 Tocco - bought for about a tenner on EBay - which serves as a second phone (Which might seem decadent, but when your battery runs flat, or you can't get a signal, supplementing your "Contract" phone with a spare PAYG one is actually quite sensible) The Tocco gives a broadly similar performance to an "iPod Touch", but with the obvious exceptions that it stores MP3's on a MicroSD card, and the battery is 100% replaceable. I put an old 8 Gigabyte Card in it, after copying a bunch of tunes to it, then set it on "shuffle", and enjoy the music. The built-in FM Radio is pretty good too. Phones have been pretty good at playing music for quite a while, with the result that even totally out of fashion models (Like the Sony Ericsson Walkman range) can be bought for a song. Slip in a £1 PAYG SIM... and enjoy a GREAT MP3 player that's worth substantially more than it costs! Ancillaries, like headphones, cases, spare batteries, external battery chargers, can be found cheaply on Ebay - particularly for older models.0

Second that.
I have Tocco Lite, inherited from the kids, 2 years ago, with an 8GB micro SD card in.
Holds about 1800 of my tracks.
On shuffle it will last 8 hours + and as you say batteries are cheap as chips if you need to replace them. P.S I don't walk the dogs for 8 hours very often. It has been used on some long drives partnered with a n FM sender.
Can't fault it, matched to some sennheiser cx300 earphones. Has some preset equalizers which give it a nice rich sound.
The only trouble is it is now full, so I have to bump stuff if I want to add new stuff.
Their replacement phones, HTC wildfires will shortly become available (end of contract). They have16Gb capability but I am not sure yet whether I will swap as they don't seem as good, music wise."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop...
