last mp3 player i bought got from ebay, just over 2years, not dead, just unusable, not the internal battery, it lights up, just wont let me get past the menu screen. when connected wont show either, it was a IItronics 4gb IMP-1805 model. possibly the memory, as i did read and write to it a lot due to using it as a flash drive aswell.
it was sent in error after i ordered a different model but as i was charged the same for it, and they let me keep it for the same price.

last one i had was a 1gb in silver looked like this lasted 2years bought from bid.tv

was thinking of getting another but a 4gb or 8gb via ebay, from a uk seller.

  • I have had a Sony Walkman player and an IPOD touch but the best I have had is an Archos USB MP3 and FM radio player with 8gb storage. It cost a tenner in ASDA and getting files onto it is a doddle - just drag and drop. Compare to the Sony and the Ipod where getting files across is painful. My advice is to keep to cheap and cheerful - unless you want hi-fidelity sound and try - if at all possible - to avoid players with proprietary music transfer systems.

I would second a Sansa clip or fuze as a possible mp3 player.

I loved my old Fuze, and love my current Clip+.
They are small, light integrate with windows media player fine, and all have a Micro SD slot, so if you buy a 4gb model and want more storage you can get a Micro SD card for a fiver or a tenner (IIRC 16gb cards start at about £8 now), to give extra capacity, or let you store different types of music on different cards (handy if you want to learn a language etc).

For the whole 9 yards of songs per GB look here

Looks like 4GB is enough for at least a day and a night of music then. Anyone know of any players that last that long on a single charge?

Sansa Clip Plus isn't made anymore, replaced by the Clip Zip, although you should still be able to find it online.

Don't get a Creative - they are very poor these days, evinced by the numerous negative reviews on amazon and sites like anythingbutipod.

iTunes is a great program - I sync my iPod Touch to it on my netbook and have never had any problems... I do limit it to around 8000 tracks, though, which is about all my 64gb iPod Touch will take.

You have to buy batteries for these.
Powered by 1 x standard AAA battery (not included)

Also the rocker switch for working it is very fiddly.

    I had a 250mb one a few years ago :o

I had the 1gb model which i got from bid.tv so i have some AAA uniross rechargables which i used in my old 1gb so i know they will last a good 8hrs each. which is 1 reason i dont want a built in battery, quicker to swap around instead of waiting to charge.
my last 4gb mp3 player had to be charged through a usb cable as for some reason the plug with the usb plug stopped working with it.
pain when you want your mp3 player playing but the battery runs out of juice cause you connected it up to the power to recharge and it didnt.

I gave up looking for AA(A) powered media players years ago; the bigger brands simply stopped making them. Last one I saw for sale was the Sansa Shaker, which was marketed towards children.

Some will apparently work while charging, but mine is most certainly not among them.

You really don't have to "suffer" itunes. Yes you need to use it, but "suffering" is way too much of an over statement. I use it to transfer things over pretty easily (vid, music, whatever) just the same as you would when you plug a device in and use a windows explorer window to do it.
You only need to use iTunes if you have an Apple device or if you download from the iTunes store (other music stores are available, see the MSE recommended Tunechecker)

As for "suffering" that was just my opinion and it did have a smilie. So saying, there are always threads on here about iTunes problems but there again it is popular as apple market share is huge. Have they fixed the automatic sync wiping out your music collection problem yet?
Using beyond a transfer method is up to the person, and is not compulsory.
I think you mean that you use whatever works for yourself. In that case agreed wholeheartedly. I suppose it's down to what you are used to - as learning a new program is always difficult.
No they generally don't last years
Flash memory based players do last for years. My Creative Zen Nano Plus is 2007 vintage and still going strong. It uses a single AAA so battery wear is not a problem. Sounds great with decent after market 'phones. It's a bit small at 1GB by today's standards.

actually flash memory players depend on how many writes you make like all memory cards, sd, mini-sd, micro-sd, tf cards, compact flash, etc. used to be something like 10,000 now it 100,000, so if you just put a load of mp3's on there and dont do anything else with it, it could last for years, 10+ however if you are formatting and changing the music or using as a flashmemory card you will end up taking years of the life of the mp3 player, in my case with the 4gb i had, every other week updating some of the programs on it i had in case of needing to use on a laptop or other computer.

You don't need to use iTunes with an iPod.. surprised more people don't know this - Winamp, Songbird etc.
