I want something to listen to music on - have a sony mp3 player can't seem to get many tunes on it and have had it a while.
I just want to be able to listen to a variety of tunes from time to time when I feel like it - where should I start?
I don't want to spend loads but a few recommendations would be good - thanks!

It depends if you are happy with using iTunes. If you are you won't go far wrong with an iPod nano or shuffle. If you would rather be able to just drag and drop (copy) mp3 files onto a player there are lots of USB flash memory type players out there. The problem is they tend to stop working after a while from my experience - wheras (touch wood) my Apple players haven't let me down yet. Bear in mind that you first have to get your tunes into mp3 format so unless you buy download your music you will have to 'rip' them from CDs - something iTunes can do for you.0

Before the iPodders arrive enmasse
Take a look at Sansa Clip or Creative Zens for a good brand low cost unitssomething iTunes can do for you.0 -

I'm not an apple fan really, but I bought myself the latest 16GB ipod Nano a couple of months ago and it's big enough for maybe 2000 tracks, assuming they were 4MB each. It measures about 4x4cm and clips onto your pocket. I bought a tiktok watch strap for mine.
Although I have to use itunes to add music to it, all my stuff is ripped from CD as mp3 so I'm not tied to using damn itunes for everything!0 -

I've got 389 tracks (roughly 27 hours) encoded at a minimum* of 256kbps VBR taking up just under 3.5GiB. Time and bitrate are more important than the number of individual files.
*They're mostly 320kbps.0 -
erm, 389 tracks, i must be doing something wrong, i got 867 ah well, I too am looking for a new mp3 player my last one died. I had the mp3 files which where on my mp3player also on my hdd as i could play them back whilst charging the mp3 player.
Just cant make up my mind, looking for something cheap and i dont like Ipad, iphones, ipods as they frankly are expensive, looking at under £20 preferably plug and play, aka no cables. pref running off a AAA battery internal batteries die over period or on the go which means you need something to recharge on the go, AAA battery = replace and go. 4gb / 8gb seen some via ebay but due to fake flash drives being sold on there and buying 1 about 4 years ago, should have known better a 32gb mp4 player for £25, which worked for 2minutes before dying. due to the hacked memory which was 4gb. which is why if someone suggested ebay it would def be a UK only seller, bought my last one which lasted 2 years from ebay, uk seller. but they dont sell them anymore.0 -

Without a doubt the Sansa Clip plus gets you the best bang for buck at the cheaper end of the market.
Best of all you don't have to use the program from hell that is iTunes:) you can load songs onto your player by syncing from Windows Media Player (already on your PC) or drag and drop using Windows Explorer.
Or spend three times the price on an iPod (which can't be expanded) and suffer iTunes.
4GB for me is about 700 songs of rock music at 192/256K
For the whole 9 yards of songs per GB look here

You really don't have to "suffer" itunes. Yes you need to use it, but "suffering" is way too much of an over statement. I use it to transfer things over pretty easily (vid, music, whatever) just the same as you would when you plug a device in and use a windows explorer window to do it.
Using beyond a transfer method is up to the person, and is not compulsory.
Various sansa products are good for cheaper ended ones. Or look at mp3 flash players from likes of maplins, or 7day shop. Pretty cheap, someone to go back to and moan at if it dies under a year, can use AAA batteries.
No they generally don't last years, but are cheap enough to be a throw away item unfortunately.0
