He's not saying like it or lump it, he's given you a more affordable option, which seems very thoughtful to me.
I'd apologise and say you got a bit confused and go for the drinks.0 -
I don't really understand the problem here.
If the meal is too expensive for you just let him know you'll be joining him for drinks ...
If he wants to have an expensive meal that is surely fine, as long as he does not pressure people to join him, which he clearly does not do if he has already pointed out that if it is expensive you can join him for drinks...0 -
So feeling narked, you sent him a reply that makes it difficult for him to answer, and then you wonder whether you've offended him or not?0

Yep, I can see your point.

His birthday, his choice of venue, it isnt his problem you work part time to be fair. Id go for the drinks, or the meal aswell just choose the cheapest option. I often just have a side or starter as a main when i cant afford a meal but dont want to miss out.0

You said you want to do both, but the meal is too expensive. You haven't chosen from the three options (meal/drink only/none) so it sounds like you want a fourth option... As CH27 said he may be wondering if you mean he should change the venue... or maybe whether you're hinting he should sub your meal, as he's chosen an expensive place.
Best to straighten this one out quickly

If expense is the main hurdle, you can set out to do things in a way that are palatable to you.
Let's say that your objectives are (please feel free to add, as I don't know you well. Lol):
- keep expense down
- wish him a happy birthday
- sit down for a meal with him
You could send him another text, saying that sorry you couldn't afford to attend the official birthday do, but it would be nice to wish him a happy birthday, and how about you meet up another time for a meal (that you cook or at an affordable venue)?0 -
I've sent another message apologising that my reply was a bit confusing. I misinterpreted what was said if I'm honest.
I've picked all my toys up now!

This would be my option, it makes the situation clear, and personally I would be pleased to receive such a message from a friend that I wanted to celebrate my Birthday with, hope you sort things out, good friends are precious.Slimming World at target0
