I bought my friend's little boy a wooden personalised memory box (ebay, I think). Can hold a lot of the other Christening bits n bobs and sit on a shelf, or personal stuff can be put in it over the years.

You can buy lots of lovely kids religious stuff, which you could supplement with your case of port, or other secular gift too.
For example we have a gorgeous wooden Noah's ark shape sorter, and some great children's books of bible stories aimed at babies and toddlers. Lucy Cousins, who wrote and illustrated the Maisie books, for example did a great Noah story. If you search on amazon in the kids book section for specific stories you remember from the bible - eg Daniel in the lions den, Joseph, Jonah, Noah, etc - I am sure you will find a great selection.0 -
I just wonder if the parents ARE religious? A lot of parents around here have a Christening as an excuse for a party, and I'm sure that any religious gifts would end up in a charity shop a few years down the line
Also... are you a practising Christian?
Edit: '...religious gifts for 'those' children would end up...'
wasn't insinuating that your friends would do that

I was basing my response on OP answering a question about whether parents were religious with the words: "yes. He is being christened into the RC church".

My husband is godfather to my neice - and as a christening present - we had made for her, her first pair of Dr Martin boots in pink and gold with fairys painted onto them (if you knew us you would understand - even though she is now 10 they still on her shelf and she knows who they are from and that we love her very much. We also bought her an angel snow globe - quite a large one that is on a shelf in her bedroom to watch over her when she sleeps.
My mum died last year - she shakes the globe and now thinks as the angel as Nanny who is watching over her.0 -
We bought my godson a quarter sovereign. That was about £100 (although I think the price of gold has gone up since then).
My goddaughter will get premium bonds but we discovered that only parents and grandparents can buy a child premium bonds, so we had to give the money to her father to buy them.

At a recent christening I attended, three special gifts for the baby (girl) were: a home made tapestry, a wall picture with the girl's name spelt out in individual letters, and a hand drawn picture of her from a baby photo. That was truly special.0
