Christening gift

I have been asked to be godmother to my nephew so need a good Christening gift, something different from the usual gifts that will be given.

Does anyone have any ideas?

My husband was a godfather, and I bought the niece a little gold locket, on the basis that over the years, we would build up her jewellery box so that she'd be reasonably equipped by the time she was a young lady of 16.

I suppose the male equivalent would be a high quality pen, that would hold its value?

I 'bought' my GS a star - well had one named for him at least!

Also bought a teramundi (sp??) pot, with the deal that the only money that goes in there is the kind that folds!! Each birthday I 'top up the pot' with some more cash - my intention was that it go towards his uni fund, his parents seemed really happy with it!

Just to clarify - I do give him a pressie for his birthday also!

Both good ideas, especially like the money pot idea.

It's harder with a boy as jewellery is kind of out of the option.

As a spiritual guardian you chose a meaningless piece of paper and a way of saving where no interest will ever be paid and the money will be eroded by inflation? If the queen dies the money in the pot will cease beng legal tender. That's pretty likely in the next 10 years, never mind 18. You might as well strap your cash to a firework and blow it up!! :rotfl:

Nooooooooo. Not even a tiny bit "good ideas" unless you like wasting your money.

They will be able to break the pot and swap the money over.

Thought that was a bit of a mean reply above , the thought of the star is nice also, value isn't everything.

Anything then can be a waste of money if that's your thinking. We don't know what will be valuable in the future and what won't.

And then what? Buy another pot for the money that will be worth even less than face value in 18 years? It's bonkers!!

The star isn't legally named after him, so that was a waste of money. Might as well print a certificate giving him the moon and sun for how real it is!!

My little brother was 17 years younger than me. I got him little 22 and 18 karat gold "lumps", e.g. a little gold dragon, etc. Gold tends to hold its value, and if sold at the right time, can pay off well enough.
