I personally wouldnt bother with a netbook but would plump for a tablet device. You can pick up some real good 9.7inch models for under £200, have a look at ebuyer.co.uk for some of their deals.
If you have the money though seriously consider the Apple ipad 2 or 3 since they are without doubt the best device on the market bar none (in my opinion)
Problem with the netbook is the atom processor is still in my opinion very weak and only allows you to do one thing at a time without compromising user experience.
However if you are set on a netbook again dont pay any more than £200 and check out the outlet shops on eBay for Argos and other electrical retailers since they have some great deals.
I would personally go for a Samsung or Asus netbook since they were the original ones selling them and have aesthetically pleasing models
Listening to music through rather chunky speakers and posting here too without apparent compromise. That is with a N270.
Honestly, what a load of guff about processors. The OP asked about web and emails, not video editing.
Girlfriend bought an MSI U135 with a six cell battery for £130 from Argos Outlet . Stopped using the laptop altogether.0 -
Of course everyone is allowed to have their opinions. Thats what this is about isn't it?
The Acer Aspire referred to above is now £209 at Amazon - and probably IMO offers a compromise between price vs quality - reviews are pretty good too. Always get cheaper, depends on the OPs attitude to price vs quality.0 -
Here is a link to one on HotUk deals

..seems a good price ..although a refurb ..I would go for it.
Amazon warehouse is a good place to look as is Dell outlet
The amd dual core processors are the ones I would aim for ..Cheap but good.
Read the coments and specificaly the ones about display resolution ..,It does matter and it does make net books that have alower display less user friendly
There is also a DM1 refurb linked ..that won't open so here is it in silver :

Do you consider £300 for a Netbook inexpensive?0 -

I don't wish to be rude, but aS I said you are allowed yr opinion amd I am allowed mine. Neither of us know what the OP considers to be fair value. We are just giving info, which we should all be allowed to do without unwarranted criticism. Can we leave it there please.0 -

Is it your opinion that £300 for a Netbook inexpensive? It's a simple question.
This is a website based on saving money. Can you demonstrate that spending £300 on your suggestion/opinion is in any way inexpensive.
For me £300 is Ultra Notebook territory. HD screen, RAM higher than 1GB, Home Premium as a minimum, HDMI output....
But you seem to think that £300 is inexpensive for an outdated Netbook. I would like to know why.
Whilst you are allowed to have your own opinion, once you post it on a public forum, you have to accept that the subject is open to debate.
I disagree that my questions are unwarranted. I am of the opinion that your suggestions are patently ridiculous.
Sorry, I don't wish to be rude, but I cannot get away from that conclusion.
£300 for someone who asked for a machine to "just for e mails & a bit of web surfing"?
You've lost me. Can you help me gain some understanding of your opinion/suggestions?0 -
Well my zenbook was what I'd call a bargain. It's the same spec as a £1400 MacBook air, rrp £1000 and picked up on the currys eBay outlet for £820. :-) Great for what I need.
Which is why I suggested a £200 budget could get a net book. My wife has an Acer One and I have an Eee 1005ha I think!0 -
It's always good to have 3G(and upwards) capability, for when WiFi availability is scarce or when you want a bit more privacy. Internet Banking for example.
You might have problems with some tablets in that respect, unless they have built in 3G capability.
Where are the Tablet geeks when you need them?0 -
I've had an Asus 1005HA netbook for a couple of years - it came with 1gb of RAM, a 160gb harddrive and an Intel Atom N270.
Although it ran Windows XP fine, I wanted to run Windows 7 - so the first thing I did to it, was upgrade the RAM to 2gb. The spec didn't change from that for about a year, but it ran Windows 7 perfectly well.
After about a year's ownership of the netbook, I came across a cheap 64gb SSD drive. I realised this wouldn't speedup tasks which were CPU dependant, but I knew it would make the netbook snappier to use. The SSD drive was the best thing I bought for the netbook - it makes loading Windows, Word, etc, so much quicker!
The processor is fine for what I was the netbook for. Maybe try and find slightly beefier processor, other than that it's adequate.0 -
Unless it's cheap...and I mean cheap, I would be looking at a Cedar Trail CPU at a minimum....and that would have to be cheap too.
Argos Outlet has the MSI U180 for around £175, but I don't see a six cell battery listed. Otherwise, performance-wise, AMD as mentioned before.0
