Looking at buying something inexpensive to take on holiday just for e mails & a bit of web surfing via free WiFi spots. Any recommendations or ones to avoid please?

I personally wouldnt bother with a netbook but would plump for a tablet device. You can pick up some real good 9.7inch models for under £200, have a look at ebuyer.co.uk for some of their deals.
If you have the money though seriously consider the Apple ipad 2 or 3 since they are without doubt the best device on the market bar none (in my opinion)
Problem with the netbook is the atom processor is still in my opinion very weak and only allows you to do one thing at a time without compromising user experience.
However if you are set on a netbook again dont pay any more than £200 and check out the outlet shops on eBay for Argos and other electrical retailers since they have some great deals.
I would personally go for a Samsung or Asus netbook since they were the original ones selling them and have aesthetically pleasing models0 -
If I was going for a netbook I wouldn't go for an Atom device I'd go for an AMD C-60. I'd go for the Acer Aspire One 722. 11.6 inch screen £244 roughly, full version of windows 64bit. A lot more useful than an ipad and half the price.

I bought the OH the HP DM 1 ..But it was on a special...So cheaper than now.
I agree with previous poster .. stay away from atom processors ..get a small netbook size ..but a processor that can do what you want.0 -
Thanks for your advice; have had a look at ebuyer, but the tablets vary in price hugely, and since the spec means absolutely nothing to me, I'm a bit lost! I can't justify the price of an i pad, so the cheapies look much more interesting and as long as they'll connect to free wifi for e mails & web?0

Asus Transformer all the way.0

What processor do you recommend then? I can't even work out what processor this old Acer laptop has!0 -
I have a fairly old Eee PC that you can pick up sub-£200 readily, and runs Windows7 fine for emails and browsing. Battery life is fairly good and visibility outdoors possible on the LED backlit screen. Nothing wrong with the atom!
I have a an android tablet and a zenbook too, but they aren't cheap options.0 -
I'm still a much bigger fan of netbooks rather than tablets. Typing this on a proper keyboard is so much nicer than a virtual keyboard on a touchscreen. Nothing wrong with the Atom processor for a lot of tasks, like email, web, viewing photos etc, and it's not like a tablet would be faster.
I would avoid Windows though - Ubuntu works just fine on a netbook and helps keep the price down.0 -
A couple of suggestions to look at. (i) Acer Aspire One D255 around £250, or (ii) the Toshiba NB-520-10P with dual core processor around £3000
