Vodafone contract - Redundant how can I cancel?

Smudgey
Smudgey Posts: 5 Forumite
My nephew has a 24 mth Vodafone contract, he's now been made redundant and simply cannot afford the payments.

My sister and I have read the contract several times and cannot find anyway to cancel because of redundancy.

Has anyone found a way around this please.:(

You can't...a contract is a contract, job or no job.

You can't. Without wanting to be harsh, this is what a. Savings b. Income protection insurance is for

    How many months remaining?

Take the number of months, multiply by the monthly payment and that there is the settlement figure. They used to take a small sum off the outstanding balance but stopped that a while ago - something makes me think it was 17.5%.

What not to expect - speaking to Vodafone and them offering to "settle" the contract on any terms such as redundancy or handing back the phone.

Perhaps the redundancy payment will cover the early termination fee, or cover the payments until he has a new position. (He does intend on getting another job, yes?)

If you look to pay off the contract, selling the phone could contribute towards it. An Apple iPhone 4/4S will fetch a nice bit of cash - Vodafone may unlock it for free making it easier to sell.

The contract will stand job or no job, its still a valid contract and will have to be paid.

The change of contract ownership route may be worth a thought if your nephew knows of a best friend or relative willing to take over the contract, then all responsibility for the contract and repayments will be with a new owner. This will be subject to the new owner meeting Vodafone credit criteria.

If the phone is in a reasonable condition, sell it and put the money towards part of the cancellation charges or repayments.

    Thanks for the quick replies.

I thought this might be the case. He is particularly upset as he spoke with his employer prior to taking out the contract, and asked if his job was safe. It would appear that his employer was less than honest with him!

My nephew was in a low paid job, which he had had for
7 yrs, and has a young child to support, and rent to pay, therefore there was never the opportunity to build any savings.

I suspect that there are thousands of people in the same position, with no way out of an impossible situation.

That's really sad news about your nephew. It may still be worth speaking to Vodafone about the situation. Depending on how long he's had the contract for he may be able to negotiate a lower tariff.

There's also the option of selling the phone, getting a cheap replacement and using the proceeds to help pay the bills or settle the contract.

There is no option to downgrade the tariff, you have to pay what was agreed.

    Hi Smudgey,

I am sorry to hear about your nephews situation.

As Ann S has mentioned, a transfer of ownership for the contract would be a good option for him.

If he would like to discuss his options with me, he can email me here with WRT135 FAO Heidi in the subject.

    Kind regards,
