espresso is right as I found out to my cost. I recently purchased a cheapy virgin nokia to put a contract t mobile sim card into and it wouldn't have it.
can only echo my personal position.
I will explain very simply
I have 2 mobiles, one locked to Virgin, and one locked to T-Mobile, I have 2 sims, 1 Virgin, 1 T-Mobile,both sims work in both mobiles, I have had both mobiles from new, I have not unlocked any of them, I have tried a Vodafone sim in both mobiles, it will not work in either of them as they are locked to their respective nerworks. I also have an older mobile that is unlocked and all the 3 sims work in that mobile, thus proving that my vodafone sim is live.
Now if you do not want to accept this there is nothing I can do about that, I know personally that they work.
I do not use mobiles much, as they are basically emergency phones bought whilst on offer, only basic phones.
There is nothing more to say!
