I have contactless Barclays debit card and the only place that had the contactless machine was macdonalds, it's stupid, it's pointless and a waste of money on the banks side.

It kinda defeats the purpose of having chip and pin even though its only a max of £15 that can be spent.

So the banks are valuing £15 as 0 really. and people can scan the card using mobile phones and get the details.
  • I didn't mean to start a big discussion over contactless.

That wasn't actually my point, my point was whether the card was an online or offline type card.

As the online cards get rejected at motorway tolls abroad and only the offline ones work.

I only brought up contactless as I remember someone saying that if the card supports contactless there is more chance it is offline.

I don't really care for contactless either way but I do find that offline cards give a lot less headache abroad where a lot of machines just read the mag stripe and spit the card out if its online only.

So is 492181 an offline Lloyds debit card or can you not tell by the BIN ?

    Thanks

All lloyds cards are offline, except the one for the basic account which is silver with a small 2012 logo in the top corner.

I dont think all Lloyds cards are offline. As I've just been on holiday and on the flight two girls tried to pay with a green and silver debit card and neither of them worked. However when I used my card which is a green contactless card it worked.

  • So it does come down to whether the card is contactless or not with Lloyds or not and not the bank identification number ?

Apparently I've been issued a new contactless card which is slowly winging its way to me . . .

You need a good credit rating (normally) to get an offline card, you need an offline card to get a contactless card (normally). You can tell if the card is online or offline by the BIN (normally) but they only real way to check is either the magnetic stripe or the chip.

The number of normalies is just as their could always be a bank that implements things completely differently. For example I got an offline Metro Bank debit card as soon as I turned 18, certainly no credit history.
  • So to clarify if I get a 492181 Green debit card with contactless and its from Lloyds TSB chances are its of the offline variety ?

As so far I haven't really had anything concrete from anyone.

I know my Natwest card is offline as its Purple but no idea with Lloyds . . .
