Forced to apply for job too far away?

  • What's unacceptable about it? I would travel 1 hour each way if unemployed. Is driving not an option (given the lack of public transport)?
I know people who spend more time than that travelling to work.

The hour's travel isn't a problem: read the post. The problem is that there isn't any transport by the time his shift would end.

Get taxis until he has enough saved to buy a moped, moped until he has enough saved to buy a car.

    Sorted.

I mean, that's if he actually is a jobseeker.

An hours journey by bus would be a £20 cab fare at least.
Thats £100 of his wages gone each week before he pays for the bus.
I cant see him saving anything can you?

    What a stupid suggestion

Perhaps he could set up a tent in their car park and live there all week and come home at weekends.

Why already assume this job is a definite no and not worth going for if he is indeed the perfect candidate for the job? I really don't understand people who give up at the first stumbling block rather than seeing opportunities and seeing how problems can be overcome.

There are many ways things could turn his way. They could be very keen on him and be prepared to offer him another shift until he has enough to buy himself a cheap car. Maybe he can ask if anyone else doing the same shift lives close by, maybe there are other mode of public transport he isn't aware they might tell him about, maybe maybe maybe.... what has he got to lose to go and give it a go? Unless he does want to stay on benefits forever until the ultimate perfect job somehow lands in his lap...

How can he do more shifts to save for a car when he CANT GET HOME?
So he starts a job with no way of getting home and hopefully someone will drop him home. What if nobody can?
What other modes of public transport are there that he might not know about. There are busses, trains, undergrounds, trams etc but how many operate past midnight?

Ive done shift work and had 5 minutes to finish work, dash up the road and catch the last bus home. As it was the last bus it terminated half way through the route so i had to walk the last couple of miles.
If i missed the bus or i got out late i HAD to pay for a taxi.
I had young kids at the time and every penny was needed.
  • I think your friend should go for the interview but explain to the employer that if they give him the job than he would have to leave before the last bus so he cannot work till the end of the shift. If they still want to keep him than he has explained his circumstances and the employer is happy to let him go earlier. If the employer isnt willing to do that than your friend went for the interview wanting a job but could not get the job due to unforeseen circumstances.
If it ever got to the point where i have no money to eat. I would go to the police station and break something to get myself arrested. Atleast i would get a warm cell and food and if everyone who get SANCTIONED by the job center did that than the government would have to change there policy about sanctioning so many people on the work program.

Go in and the first thing that comes out of your mouth is can i join the union and is it very good....works every time

£4.80HR jesus what poverty wages they are..
It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.

I had this problem repeatedly, I was told to apply for jobs that were a nightmare to get to, and I was told in the end to buy a bike. This was for a job off a dual carriageway in a business park, there is no way I'd be happy cycling that aside from the fact it was quite a way away to start with. My advisor was able to tick a box that said "not applied for, transport issues", so I am not sure why this doesn't apply to other people, maybe he can talk to someone else? The way to sabotage the interview is to say he is concerned about transport as he won't be able to get home, and not offer up any solutions. This should have two good results - either a) "oh dear well you can't do the job" or b) "that's OK, so-and-so lives near you and can give you a lift" and he can travel for free.

I went for a job that was an hour and a half walk away, I had to walk it as there were no buses that went down that route, and the people were so impressed they gave me a lift back home and now come and pick me up every week!!

Just apply for it but make yourself sound strange or inept but not over the top. The Jobcentres are so busy nowadays that they don't have time to scrutinise every application. Afaik at most they'll just call the said employer and ask who's applied. There's no guarantee of an interview even if you want it anyway with so many people applying for each job so just apply to satisfy the jobcentre quotas and they won't give a !!!!. If you start arguing with them or don't do what you've agreed to do they'll make it more difficult for you. If he gets it you can get help with travel expenses I think.
Failing all that just say you're having a nervous breakdown because you have people who want to get you in said city and you don't feel safe. Just play the game they don't really care as long as you don't give them any reason to be difficult with you.

My DH works with a chap that has no car so has to use public transport and works shifts.
He sets off at 10 am to get to work to start at 1.30 pm, when he finishes off nights at 6am he has to wait til 8am to get a bus and if there is no bus at the time he finishes he gets a taxi, very expensive but isn't that often.
    He sometimes gets a lift.
If he really really wants a job he will do it.

Erm did you read the original post ?
The shift finishes at 11.45 pm ......are you seriously suggesting he waits for the next train at 6am ?

My we do have a lot of rocket scientists on this thread !!! :rotfl::rotfl:

I cant beleive he sets off at 10am as it takes 3.5 hours, does his shift then gets the 8am bus home.
When does he sleep or eat? he must meet himself going to work on his way home.

This post genuinely made me laugh out loud. I really hope the OP was referring to two separate shift patterns, otherwise the poor guy really needs a new job!!!
