DS is 17 months and to be honest it was a bit of BLW and "traditional" weaning. :D

With my first I was also nervous of her choking, so I started with putting fingers of toast, cheerios, raisins, and grated cheese on her tray/plate. When I saw that she managed fine with these 'not easy to choke on' foods, I was reassured enough to give her anything and everything after that :)

Another baby led weaner here :-) id suggest that you read the book by gill rapley and warn your family that your thinking about it.

Its really nice to all be able to eat the same thing and youll be surprised what they can eat even without teeth :-) its really something to watch a 8 month baby eat an orange, he spits the skin out.

A way to control the mess is to lay a cloth/shower curtain under the highchair which can be washed/wiped easily.

If your worried about gagging you can see vids of babies doing it on youtube. They cough, make scary noises, look upset then suddenly grab some more! Choking is quiet.

There is a lovely blw forum on the blw website :-)

  • I read somewhere that the gag reflex is really strong as it's teaching babies what size food they can swallow and to chew/gum the food smaller first.

From 4 months I'd use packet baby rice or something similar, nothing too sweet as some babies then only want the really sweet stuff..Just offer a couple of mouthfuls at breakfast lunch and dinner..this will cost £3 per week..

At 6 months baby can eat almost anything..

She can have weetabix with her milk for b/fast or our porridge..
Big tins of rice pudding are 13p, buy a hand blender for £4.99 and she can have mash with gravy, veg and fruits can all be blended..Tinned spaghetti and beans mashed..
She can have our juice weakened with cooled boiled water..

Forget buying stuff for £50 its not needed..trust me i'm on my 5th baby who is now 4 months and i'm weaning her too..
I always take the moral high ground, it's lovely up here...

blw is the way forward, if they don't like something they just won't it so its best to let them teach you what they like.

I bought a hand stick blender for £5 from argos and used to just blend food up with that, was a lot quicker and easier to clean than a baby blender and it did the job well.

as for costs, I used to go to the market and buy fresh food and veg, I made fruit and vegetable purees for my little one and used to let him pick at bits of grated cheese, pitta bread, cut up grapes and he would chose what he liked. they do make a mess though - might be an idea to get an art mat (eg one of those plastic sheet things) to go under the high chair so you can just pick it up and plop all the waste in the bin to spare the carpet - wish someone had told me that lol! x

you've not tasted how sweet your own milk is then, or the weetabix or the rice pudding or the fruit or the tinned spaghetti or the beans or the juice

I never get why people give their baby's juice!? Water! Milk. What's with the juice.

I was advised by my GP to give my baby juice when she was constipated. I gave her some, a couple of hours later she was no longer constipated!!
