Children riding scooters in the street very late, can we do anything?

Options
Hi all

I'm looking for some advice if possible, I'm not sure if this is the correct board so sorry if not.

A family moved into our street around a month ago, being a small village we know who they are, not very approachable. We live in a terrace on a hill, we are at the bottom, they are at the top.

The problem we are having is the children, 13, 9 and 6, riding those little metal scooters up and down the street late at night, it usually starts around 9.30 pm and goes on until 11.30 at the earliest, last night it was 12.40  Now if they want to let their children out at such hours it is up to them but the footpath runs right under our window and the noise is terrible (the scooters making noise) Another neighbour is having problems as it sets her dog off barking every time they go past.

Talking to the parents isn't really an option so is there any guidelines when noise like this becomes unacceptable? Do we ask the council for help? Maybe they could contact the landlord (it is a private rented house)

Would appreciate any help :)

    I've been Money Tipped!
Most Environmental Health departments won't come out to deal with noise from people outside because they don't have powers to resolve the situation. You can give your local council a call to see but I think they'll probably point you in the direction of the neighbourhood police team.
Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!

OP you say its not an option to talk to the parents - I suppose if they are the kind of parents who let their kids play on scooters unsupervised at 11:30pm then they're not the kind of parents who would listen to reason from neighbours either, which is a shame.

Have you spoken to other residents about it? if you all made a collective complaint to the council this would probably make a bigger impact and more likely to get an environmental health officer out.

Pray for rain, or buy some earplugs.

Report the chav scum to social services. Embellish as necessary.

Telephone Social Services with your concerns about these poor neglected children. Each time they go outside your window making a racket, simply telephone for the police to come out for anti-social behaviour.

Personally if your village is anything like mine, a few well-placed comments amongst the right people would soon see this family completely shunned until they bucked their ideas up.

But in your position I'd download the landlord's details from the Land Registry and send him an anonymous letter (from all affected) informing him of his tenant's behaviour and let him deal with it. I'd be doing that for every single incident and informing him that should you need to make it official, it will become quite difficult for him to sell the house in the future with so many disputes with neighbours on record. He'll soon shift them.

A quiet word to the local PCSO should do it, they do tend to know everyone and will be able to take this up on your behalf without formal police proceedings - unless her or his quiet word has no effect but then they will deal with it themselves so you don't have to.

Think yourself lucky, our local teenagers find it necessary to ride their motor scooters up and down our street all evening and they rev as loudly as possible to stick the knife in!
